How to do bad Character Development:
Imma put Kaneki here under fire, or rather Sui Ishida, for his poor characterisation for lots of characters. I'm here to focus on Kaneki, but when you introduce so many characters, you can't develop them all at once, which is a problem Ishida has. But, let's take a look at the elephant in the room, or rather: The worst way to make character development happen.

Kaneki was your shy, introverted book lover right? And we got to see him mature and evolve as he slowly managed to get used to being a Ghoul. Now, where did Ishida go wrong?

Making Kaneki do a 180 into Kanedgy.

That, my friends, is a BAD character development, as what you've already established, has just been chucked out the window with a herp derp, and replaced with someone else entirely. You might aswell have made a new MC.

Although, it's not that bad: It shows that the old Kaneki was weak and this new one was much stronger, but one thing I can't fathom is that- Wait, this was inside Kaneki?

There was literally NOTHING to show that Kaneki could become Kanedgy, literally, NOTHING. And the excuse of Rize and Yamori basically breaking him is weak; as if you broke... Wouldn't you get weaker? More depressed? Suicidal, even? But hang on, Kaneki only gets a major power up, a make over, and can somehow keep a bit of his old self? (This is coming from the manga, btw.)

Huh? HUH?

Kaneki is a jumble of personalities at this rate. It's not bad enough that he also the problem to mimic.

It goes a bit like:
Hey, this guy who tortured me is doing finger cracking, that stuff edgy as hell, Imma do that!

And then the finger cracking begun...

What is also unreasonable about Kaneki's sudden change is that: It's so sudden, we, as readers or viewers, go: Hang On. What... Did... Huh? Personality shifts should be subtle, and build up. Doing a 180 is unreasonable and definitely not applicable to real life... Unless you've gone insane, but Kaneki's not insane... He's actually quite stable, and to be honest... Probably less fragile than before. This is just mind blowing at how stupid this character development is. A good way to do character development is from an anime series called Death Parade. Spoilers are here, so tread lightly if you haven't seen this amazing show.

Now, character development in this show is amazing. When you have a span of 22 minutes to introduce two characters and give them personality and development, and you can pull that off consistently, take notes. (Note they managed to develop two at once... It's not perfect development, but it's still good.) The way how they bring life to those one-shot characters is through flashbacks and them playing the games.

Ok, so let's do the couple from episode one. The two get personality development, as the wife is pregnant with the baby and the father had no idea- but when she tells him about it, it's all good, right? Well, to do a bit of mistrust and some drama, flashbacks of what appears to be cheating by the female causes the male to accidentally kill them. A.k.a drive off the cliff when he was paying attention more to her. But the best bit of development was when in the end, the female lied about cheating on the father, and when Decim sends her to Hell and him to Heaven, a secondary character comes in and points out her lying for him, and when Decim realises that mistake, we get subtle character development for both.

And in the end, those two characters actually play off each other and Decim, in the end, smiled. (Yay!)

So, as you can tell, Ishida isn't the best with character development as Kaneki SUCKED at that. (Same applies to everyone else, Jesus...)

Take a few notes from Death Parade, k?

Fox, out!
