"There will be no talking, gum chewing, eating, singing, humming, tapping, touching, kissing, or sleeping," Mrs. Boyd, our now detention supervisor said.  "In this room--my room--you will solely write. I, along with the principal, am expecting a five hundred word essay on the reasons why your actions have consequences that may not just affect you now but later on in your future. The only thing I should be hearing is the sound of lead on paper and the clock ticking. Begin. You have two hours."

As soon as she turned to her desktop, I rubbed an ache in my head and then turned to see Will watching me. I tore away from him instantly and faced the blank sheet of paper whose lines seemed to stretch on for miles. Of course I know that actions have consequences, I thought, doesn't mean I wanna write about it.

I huffed and began scribbling on the paper when I heard a door open and close. When I looked up, I noticed Drew standing with his hands wrapped around a pink slip.

"Mr. Law," Mrs. Boyd said surprisingly pleasant, "strange to see you here. Why are you late?"

"Oh, um, I had a talk with Principal Meyers. I have a pass, though," Drew said as he handed the slip to Mrs. Boyd.

"No problem, sweetie, we've already gotten started but I'm sure one of your classmates can explain to you what we're doing." And with that, she looked up and eyed the room, "Will."

At the mention of his name, I turned my attention Will who obviously was disturbed by it.  "Could you explain to Drew what we are doing?"

"I'd rather you choose someone else," Will growled.  Mrs. Boyd frowned and eyed the room again. "How about..."

"I'll help him." I said involuntarily. Drew found my eyes and I gave him a subtle smile, "I can."

After a long pause, Mrs. Boyd said, "Okay. Whisper please."

Drew approached me as if he were walking on thin ice and sat down. His shower gel wafted towards me and I tried to resist the urge to fall into him. He's so close, I thought. I handed him notebook paper and adjusted my posture.

"So, um," I cleared my throat, "We're writing a five hundred word essay on actions and consequences, basically, that can affect your present as well as your future..."

"Okay," he said.

"Okay, yeah, um, that's it," I said realized how distracted I seemed. He turned away from me and began writing.

At 5:30, the sharp sound of the bell brought me back to reality. The collection of teens began aligning themselves before Mrs. Boyd with their essays in hand. I scribbled my name in chicken scrawl as soon as I saw Will preparing to leave and lined up. When the line diminished, I set down my essay before "Bitchy Boyd" and rushed out the classroom to wait for Will. I stood against the wall for about a minute when I heard someone exit the classroom.

"Will," I said expectantly but when I saw the person, my eyes widened in surprise. Drew. He glanced at me with a look I couldn't quite decipher. As he continued down his path, I noticed the protruding violet bruise that dispersed itself around his jaw and took a sharp breath in.

Another person brushed past me so quickly I didn't recognize him as Will. I grabbed his arm to prevent him from leaving and he turned around fiercely. His dark eyes, typically warm and joyful, greeted me with an annoyed expression and before I could say something, he asked, "When were you even gonna tell me?"

I stood with my words caught in my throat when he continued, "Huh? When--Were you even gonna tell me?"

I spoke when I finally realized what he was talking about, "Of course.  I just--I just didn't know the right time."

He cringed before turning away, "The right time?" Each word was its own sentence with a weight that crushed my confidence. "There shouldn't have been a right time for you to tell me about you and Drew. It should have never been going on in the first place!"

"Will," I cried out before my phone began ringing.

He sighed, "I'll be in the car..."

"Wait..." I said too quiet for him to hear. As soon as he was gone, I fumbled with my belongings and answered the call.

"Hello?" I said.

"Lauren," I recognized Hanna's voice.

"Hey."

"Hi, you won't believe what I found out," she said. "It's about Drew's baby."

I frowned and said, "I thought we finished this in Biology."

"Um, no," Hanna said.  I scoffed and she said, "You were done but I did some digging."

I rolled my eyes at her elongating silence then said, "Fine. Tell me."

"She died," Hanna said.

I let the words echo in my head struggling to understand. "What?" I coughed out.

"Their baby died, Lauren," she continued, "at the end of last summer." I let the silence stretch and suddenly remembered Drew. I had to go see him if he was still heading toward the parking lot.

"I-I-I need to go." I stuttered unsteadily. I hung up the phone and began running towards Drew's direction. I pushed open the double doors and the caressing air surrounded me. Cars were scattered about as I flung my head wildly trying to find Drew.

When I heard soft footsteps in one direction, I began following it. I spotted a figure entering their car and when I was sure it was him, I began shouting out his name. "Drew!" I shouted, "Drew!"

He turned around confused and said, "Lauren?"

I caught up to him and before I even could catch my breath, I said, "I'm sorry."

He furrowed his eyebrows confused and I noticed for the first time that his eyes sparkled when he did that.

"Your daughter. I'm sorry that she died," I continued. His face softened. "And I'm sorry that I didn't tell you about Trey the first time around. I'm sorry that I kept things from you and expect you to act differently.  I'm sorry, I'm sorry--"

He leaned in and connected our lips. His warm touch filled my whole body and made me melt uncontrollably. He caressed my cheek as I kissed him back allowing my tongue to dance with his.

"I'm sorry," he whispered. I smiled and kissed him again. As I looked out toward the parking lot, I remembered Will. I turned back to Drew and gazed into his eyes.

"Will's waiting for me."

"Oh," he said disappointed. With my hands on his chest, I gave him one last embrace before reluctantly running off.

I reentered the school and headed toward the North parking lot, a common place for students to park during the school day.

I approached the car and entered. Will didn't turn to acknowledge my presence and the only thing I could hear for a while was the sound of my seat belt buckling followed by the steady pace of our breathing then he spoke up.

"I don't want you to see him anymore."

Drew

As I entered the car, I could still feel the remnants of Lauren's presence surrounding me which made me smile once more. I began the drive to the hospital where Alison was being treated. I arrived ten minutes later and hurried inside. I checked in and found Alison's room. When I entered, I gave a subtle smile to Alison but before I could say anything I noticed a figure in the corner with familiar blonde locks and piercing green eyes.

Trey.
