Killing Characters

licensedmichino and I are making evil plans for a new series I'm going to be releasing soon >:)

We cannot be trusted with the precious lives of fictional characters

I also just made a realization...

Writing is very surefire away of torturing someone.

I mean,think about it--like,really think about it.

In the real world, there's no way you could murder someone and get away with it,even if it's someone you hated. But in a fictional universe, with so many characters at your disposal, the possibilities are virtually endless.

You can choose to kill off a side character, an innocent character who's been accused of doing something they didn't do, heck, even the main character, although this is rare in a lot of cases.

IT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE TO BE SOMEONE IMPORTANT, YOU COULD CHOOSE TO KILL OFF THE RANDOM GUY SITTING OUTSIDE A COFFEE SHOP TYPING A BUSINESS REPORT AT 2 PM IN THE AFTERNOON.

BUT then again,as writers, when we do decide to brutally murder a character in the most grotesque way possible,it has to be someone that actually matters to the audience, like the little pudgy chipper 9-year-old kid that follows his brother around constantly and imitates everything he does because he just wants so badly to grow up and be someone that matters to his brother and make him proud even if it's the last thing he does, he doesn't care if people say he can never become the astronaut he aspires to be, he doesn't care if people say that he'll never make it, that it's impossible, he's too dumb to do it. He will sure as heck do it and make his older brother proud of him because that's all he needs and that's all he ever wants:his brother's love.

So the guy writing the business report, you get to live, the audience won't care about you dying.

^^^and what I just wrote up there I think I may just write it into a short story or you guys could do it you do you^^^

Anyways,what was I saying?

Oh right,contemplating.

So any who, depending on which character we kill off, we writers can bring out some serious reactions in our readers.Remember that 9-year-old I was just talking about?

What if I

were to

have him

be

sick

and then

later die

of cancer

Imagine who you would feel

Just imagine

Most likely you would feel torn up and sad because this innocent child has died because of a horrible illness, but maybe even frustrated because this kid who wanted to make his brother proud never got to do that and it just sounds so unfair that such a hopeful person should die in a way like that.

See what I mean?

Writing is such an effective way to torture people. You may not want anything out of it,you may not even mean to do it,but whatever the case for killing off a character in an emotional way to brings a reader to tears, you've done your job successfully.

There's no law saying that you can't torture people using books, is there?

Didn't think so

You don't need to directly hurt the reader to torture them even! Just kill off a character they've grown super close to,like that 9-year-old I've been going on about,in a way that even brings you to tears (because let's be real here,if the death doesn't emotionally affect you,it may not emotionally affect the reader either). This way, you're killing too birds with one stone-- you've successfully murdered one of the reader's precious babies and you've made them cry. Happy days all around :)

There's nothing the police can do about this either. I mean, what are they gonna do?Arrest you for killing off a fictional person?

N o p e

That was never covered in their training, nothing in the law says you can get jail time for killing characters

Ok,wow, this chapter was WAAAAY longer than I thought it would be 😗

I think I've been watching too much Dan and Phil playing Sims 4
