The Last of Them

The first monster Cairo had the pleasure of interacting with had been a cream colored rabbit. She was running the hotel that he'd be staying at while he looked for a job. Just in meeting her, she seemed absolutely flabbergasted to see him. It was a look he never thought he'd see from another monster, but maybe the monsters were more acquainted with each other in the Underground than he realized. As the days passed and he interacted with more monsters in his hunt for a job, the theory seemed to hold relevance. All wore that same shock and awe look that made Cairo feel a little self-conscious about it. Was he doing something wrong? He had lived a hundred years trying to live the life of a monster, had he failed, somehow? In the end, though, all he could really do was brush it off. Cairo got a job working in retail. With his extensive background in referbishing and selling, the pawn shop owners were eager to get their hands on him. Funnily enough, Cairo had a friend who used to live in the place the shop stood now. He wondered how Dr. Gaster was doing these days.

⚔️⚔️⚔️

The little bell of the shop chimed, and Cairo found himself getting up from refurbishing an old oak rocking chair to see who it was. Imagine his surprise upon seeing the King of all Monsters standing on the other side of the counter? Cairo found himself falling into a hasty bow. "Y-your majesty!" Asgore had the same reaction as all of the monsters, yet he also was given more to work with. "I-I am so sorry, I did not mean to offend. I only thought Sans and Papyrus were the last two skeletons left after the war... there is no reason to be so formal, Mr..?" Cairo straightened himself out in shock, trying to wrap his mind around it. The last? This Sans and Papyrus were supposed to be the last? What happened to WD? That man had saved his life, taught him how to live after Samuel and his parents had died. "Cairo Typeface, at your service. Is it true what you said? The skeletons are gone, aside from those two?" He asked for confirmation. "I am afraid so, Mr. Typeface. Perhaps I can acquaint the three of you?" Asgore suggested.

⚔️⚔️⚔️

That was the end of it, really. Cairo was invited to some picnic that was happening during the weekend, so he could meet the other two. Afterward, he helped Asgore find a gift for his ex to win her back. When his shift was over, he headed to the cemetery. It was about time to visit his good human friends. He brought flowers for Samuel and his parents and weeded the old graves. This was the Lockhart Cemetery, named after the mayor at the time of the war. All humans that had been killed in the Human Monster War were buried here and forgotten, seeing as the war itself was forgotten. Every slab of stone was broken and grayed with age, and the grass was long and unkempt. Some of the graves had been defaced by teens with spray paint. It broke Cairo's soul... "Disgusting ain't it?" Cairo looked up at the fish woman who spoke to him. If she was surprised, she hid it well. "Wanna help me clean this place up? No soul deserves to be treated like this, even humans..." Cairo nodded his agreement. "Yeah... I agree. I'm Cairo, by the way." He introduced. "Undyne. Now, let's get to work!"
