Today we will cry,
Tomorrow we might die;
But it's not death we fear,
There's a story behind each desolate tear.
To go peacefully would be a dream,
That's not why we scream-
Our woeful shouts have another reason,
Something akin to treason.
It's the trepidation of losing our voices,
The terror of someone taking away our choices;
Thought of a painful death doesn't scare us,
The dread is for all our hopes turning back to dust.
To be shunned; silenced; never heard of again,
Forced to hide behind a veil of disdain,
Death would be better than being helpless;
Every oppressed breath is torture, seemingly endless.

Dedicated to anyone who has ever felt oppressed. I wrote this because my heart breaks every time I hear a story about oppression or misogyny.
