earlier in the year

an optimist
untouched by the labels of the world

and then all eyes darted to her
she was being judged by every angle

so in the middle of the year
she swapped her glasses for contacts
collared shirts turned into sweatshirts
and traded baggy for skinny jeans

she was still positive
in a different way
she knew all of her flaws by heart

and then all eyes disregarded her
and focused on something else

so at the end of the year
she was positive but lifeless
she swapped her sweatshirts for crop tops
her chapstick in for lipgloss
and purchased shorts that sat above her knees

and no eyes stared at her
because she was boring and average
cut down

and she was free
