Tanka (short song) poetry originated in the 9th century in Japan with one line of thirtyone speech sounds. Today the tanka consists of five lines of thirtyone syllables. 

The subject of Tanka poems are normally about nature, love or  strong emotion. The Tanka is divided into two parts. The first three lines create an image, and the lower phrase twists to ideas from that image.
