Gustave would often help Lucas by taking care of Christy while Lucas had rehearsal for operas. He sometimes had to watch both Christy and Catherine at the same time, since his parents still performed in operas from time to time.
It was difficult for Erik to find roles where he could wear a mask, but every now and then, a spot would open up.
Lucas took any job that he could, as he needed more money, now that he had to take care of Christy. Still, he did not regret taking her. Not even for a moment. He knew that Christy needed to be in the care of someone who would love her no matter what, and he did the best he could to take care of her.
One week was particularly hard, since Lucas was working twelve hours a day almost every day. That meant that Gustave was in charge of taking care of Christy.
It was decided that Celeste would be buried in Paris and her memorial service was to be that weekend. It was hard on everybody.
Lucas had to arrive at the cemetery early and Gustave went with him for moral support. The two had to make sure that everything would go as planned.
Gustave had to run back to the carriage to fetch the rest of the roses which were to be placed upon the casket.

Lucas was in solitude when he began to sing, "You were once my one companion. You were all that mattered. You were once my friend and sister. Now, my world is shattered. Wishing you were somehow here again. Wishing you were somehow near. Try to forgive. Teach me to live. Give me the strength to try. Help me say goodbye."

Gustave walked up and put an arm around his friend's shoulders. "We've been through a lot, you and me." The two shed a few silent tears and Gustave added, "We must purge our thoughts of sad memories for today."

The men finished setting up and waited for everyone else to arrive.

"You know, after all this time, I don't think I've asked you how you're doing," Lucas mentioned.

"I'm a mess. I mean, in that letter, Celeste told me that she still loved me after all that time. The thing is, I never got over her. I still love her. She's gone, and yet I still love her. I still can't believe she's really gone," Gustave replied.

"I miss her dearly. My life will not be the same without her. I was miserable with her living in London. Now, I know that I certainly will never see her again," Lucas said right before he broke into sobs.

Gustave joined in his friend's sobbing. "I never got to tell her how much I loved her," he cried.

"I didn't either," Lucas cried back.

The service was beautiful, yet dignified, just like Celeste. Lucas was happy when all four of the Destlers attended. He had expected Erik, Christine, and Gustave but wasn't expecting Catherine. He knew that Catherine wasn't exactly thrilled when Celeste and Gustave were dating, so he didn't think she'd make it. Alas, she did and Lucas greatly appreciated it.
After the service, Gustave took Lucas out for a cup of coffee. Neither spoke a single word to each other the entire time. Both men were lost in grief.
Gustave wondered if he could ever find love again. Celeste was the first person he had ever loved. He was emotionally scarred when she left him and the scar ran deeper when she died. It broke his heart to know that Celeste had been treated with such disrespect. Why did Henri have to treat her that way? Why?
