About three months later, Bella fell ill. It seemed so sudden. One day she was fine, then the next she was sick.
Gustave was worried, but Bella assured him that she was fine and that it would pass after a couple days.
With each passing day, Bella grew more ill. She was very fatigued and got many bad headaches.
One day, Bella was feeling dizzy and fainted. Gustave immediately rushed her to the doctor and Catherine went with him for moral support.
The doctor wouldn't let Gustave or Catherine in the room. Catherine was trying her hardest to calm her brother, but to no avail.

"She could be dying in there for all I know. I can't lose her, Catherine. I can't lose her," Gustave sobbed.

"You're not going to lose her. She's going to be just fine. Calm yourself, Gustave," Catherine comforted.

After what seemed like hours, the doctor finally came out.

"How is she? Is she okay? Is she dying? Can I see her?" Gustave questioned. "Tell me she's not dying. I can't lose her. I can't."

"Calm yourself, boy!" The doctor exclaimed. "Your wife should be fine. Everything that's happened is normal for a woman in her condition. Some of her symptoms may continue for the next few months, but after her first trimester, most of them should subside."

"A woman in her condition?" Gustave exclaimed. "What condition?"

"You mean to tell me that you don't know?" The doctor asked.

"Clearly," Catherine spoke up with an air of irritation, "he hasn't the fainted idea what you're talking about, so with you please just tell him?"

"Monsieur Destler, I believe congratulations are in order," the doctor began.

"Are you saying what I think you're saying?" Gustave asked.

"Monsieur Destler, your wife is pregnant," the doctor finished.

Gustave felt himself lose his footing. Next thing he knew, he was about two inches from the floor, then everything went black.

"He doesn't react to news well," Catherine remarked.

"Clearly," The doctor replied. "Although, this isn't the worst reaction I've seen."

"What should we do? Should we try to revive him?"

"I think letting him be is best for now. If he isn't awake in five minutes, we'll revisit the issue. In the meantime, you may come see your sister-in-law."

Catherine entered the room just as Bella was buttoning her dress.

"Catherine, did the doctor tell you the news?" Bella asked excitedly.

"Yes, he did. Congratulations!" Catherine exclaimed.

   "Where's Gustave?"

"He's passed out on the floor in the other room."

"Oh no," Bella laughed. "Someone doesn't react well to good news."

"Tell me about it," Catherine laughed.

Gustave revived shortly and returned home with his wife and sister. "I'm going to be a father," he thought.

"How do we tell Mother and Father?" Catherine asked.

"Oh no. I didn't even think about that. What's Father going to say? He's definitely going to kill me," Gustave winced.

"Relax, Gustave. Erik will be just as thrilled as we are. I'm sure of it," Bella assured. "It's a baby, not a crime."

"Yeah, okay," Gustave thought. "To Erik Destler, the words baby and crime are one and the same. I'll be dead within the hour."
