On the road

THE REALIZATION THAT THEIR ONCE SAFE HOME was becoming more of a hazard every minute they spent there worried the Romano's. Estella was the most concerned, her fears going much further than that of her own safety. She had a child, a twelve year old girl that she needed to protect.

No matter the costs.

"Come on, everyone needs to pack the fuck up and get in the car, we've got to go." She instructed, watching as her daughter worriedly buckled herself into her seat.

None of the family really wanted to go, they felt safe on the outskirts of Atlanta as they waited for Luca to come back with Joseph, their brother who had been sick in the hospital when this all went down.

They tried to wait, but, it had been two weeks since the man left and the way the Z's were piling up, they had no choice.

"Hold your damn horses, alright? Serena's getting her guitar." Felix snapped, his daughter responding to him with a simple glare.

"God forbid stepmother dearest forgets her guitar." Milo mumbled to himself, sliding into the seat next to Avery before laying his head on the girls shoulder.

"You stink." The young girl voiced, smacking him upside the head to shake him off. "I stink too but you stink real bad, Mimi."

"All offense taken." The youngest Romano crossed his arms over his chest, his lips forming into a pout that earned a laugh from his niece.

A sudden swoosh sounded off, the group looking towards the noise. They spotted Aurora, her bow in hand with a satisfied half smile on her face. She had been getting pretty good with it, weeks of training finally paying off.

"That's it, dad. Two more seconds and we are leaving your wife here, i'm not dealing with these damn zombies just so she can live out her rock star fantasies." Estella said to him sternly, the woman getting into driver's seat, her ex husband already in the car waiting patiently for everyone to file in.

There was no protesting on Felix's side, he nodded his head, putting a hand out to signal for the woman to calm down.

"Let me go get her, okay? We'll be back in less than five." The man reasoned, slowly stepping backward.

"I'll give you three." Estella turned her attention to her sister who was still shooting at walkers, no sign of her wanting to stop. "Rory, get in the van, now."

They had been cooped up awhile, and the Romano's were full of anger, some more than others.

Felix quickly walked back towards the apartment buildings they had been held up in, scoffing at the fact that his daughter was bossing him around as if he was a child. She had always been someone who took care of the whole family but, since the beginning of all this, the woman became stronger, fiercer. He was proud of her, she grew up into almost exactly what he wanted her to be.

That didn't mean the guy didn't get pissed off when she started acting like a cop, bossing people around.

"Rena, we need to get out of here!" The eldest Romano's voice was firm, yet quiet as to not attract any unwanted attention. As he walked up the stairs he watched his surroundings completely, not wanting to be caught off guard in any way.

The gurgling of one of those zombie things started sounding off as he made it up to the floor he left his wife on, the man not even batting an eyelash. He had killed before this all happened, and now that he had free reign.

Only god could help the people who crossed him.

"Honey?" He called out lightly, using his switch blade to lodge it in the head on an oncoming predator. He kicked it for good measure after it fell to the ground, the almost animal like thing not even moving before he decided it was time to continue. "We really gotta go, Stella is serious about leaving us."

Silent sobs came from one of the open doors, Felix popping his head in to see that his wife was crying on the floor.

"It broke, it's the only thing I have from home, and it broke." Serena said through a few heavy breaths, the woman wiping her face every few moments to prevent her tears from falling anywhere else.

"You've got me from home, and if we don't get the hell out of here, that won't be true for much longer." The Romano man bent down, helping his wife up before he carefully looked out the doors, realizing that the coast was clear. "We'll find you a new guitar, a better one, okay?"

Serena stayed silent, allowing her husband to drag her through the hallways on the apartment building and down the stairs. Once they reached the front door, even more zombies were in the front than when the man went in. He groaned, running a hand over his face as he thought of what to do.

"Damnit, damnit, damnit." Felix was utterly frustrated with his situation, being able to see the van but, not able to actually get to it. "I know you're upset but, we've got work to do now, and you've gotta help me now, baby. Can you do that?"

Once again, his wife stayed silent, the man cursing to himself for what felt like the millionth time that day.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

Three zombies went down, causing enough confusion for Felix to be able to run forward, stabbing as many z's as he could. Serena trailed behind him, the woman in some sort of fuzz that she couldn't exactly escape. She would have to soon though, if she wanted to make it out alive.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

More shots, less ammo, and most definitely the attraction of even more zombies coming their way.

"Hurry up, dad. We gotta go!" Milo yelled at the top of his lungs, the boys voice squeaking as he awkwardly waved his hands toward the van.

Sal stayed quiet, running an axe through the head of a zombie before pulling it out with ease. They had cleared enough of a path for Felix and Serena to get through, the four of them quickly heading into the van. Hopefully, they'd be safe and sound.

"Buckle up." Estella mumbled, stomping on the gas as hard as she could, a wave of zombies shuffling after the car.

"Those things are such big dumb babies." Avery said to her uncle, furrowing her brows. "Am I right? Or am I right?"

"What you are is a forty five year old lady stuck in a twelve year old body." Milo mumbled, furrowing his brows at the girl.

"Well, maybe you are a two year old in a eighteen year olds body." The young Richards girl responded, earning both her and her uncle a flick in the head from Aurora.

"Would you two quit it? I'm trying to figure out where we go next." Estella said the them both, motioning for them to be quiet with her hands.

They tended to use hand gestures a lot, it just expressed their emotions even more.

"Fine." They both mumbled at the same time, Avery blowing away strands of hair from her face.

"We need to leave Georgia." Serena said out loud, but, quietly all at the same time. "It's the best bet."

So, that was the plan... but, plans never work out how people want, do they?
