"Anything else for you today?" I asked while scanning the books her customer had selected.

"No, I got everything I need." The girl said happily.

"Ooh, this is a good book. First time read?" I asked, seeing a particularly well written book in her stack.

"Yeah. My bestie read it and told me it's worth it.. and I found more books while I was at it so, you know." She chuckled, having her card ready.

I put her books in a bag and let her pay.
"Well enjoy." I said watching her go.
She waved a thank you as she left, and I turned back to a shelf I was stocking previously.

The store was always slow. And that was nice. I enjoyed the small tasks, unboxing and setting up displays.. I only worked with two other people. The owner, a wonderful nice old woman who reminded me of my mother. Her name was May.

My other co-worker was Liz, a spunky teenager who worked on the weekends.

It didn't pay a lot, but May offered the upstairs spare room to me to live in rent free as long as I worked full time for her. And it's not like I had much else to do.

"Hello dear. The store is so beautiful since you started working.. you truly have a touch in design." May said gently as she walked in from the back.

She was holding lunch, and it looked like Italian.

"Fettuccine Alfredo?" I asked with a grin.

"You know it." She agreed. Setting the food on the counter.

"Shall I close the shop for lunch?" She asked while unwrapping the boxes, the steam escaping around the edges.

"Nah.. I can get up to help whoever that comes. We don't get a lot of business as it is." I said pulling out forks for the food, and setting them on the counter.

"Oh dear, you're so considerate." May said while she opened the steaming containers of pasta and stuck the forks in.

I snort, shaking my head at her words. "Very funny, May. I'm not really worth all the praise you throw at me."

May gives me a pointed look, her blue eyes staring into mine for a few seconds before she shakes her head, passing me the pasta.

"We need to work on that self confidence of yours." She said twirling the fettuccine around her fork and eating it.

I did the same, eating the creamy delicacy with a grin. "I can be confident." I said in between bites.

"Haven't seen it yet." She smiled in jest.

Days like these help forget the worries of the past. A simple life where I didn't have to go anywhere.. and still have a friend, and something to do.

"Thanks May, this is heaven.." i said when i finished the box.

"Of course. You know I like to take care of my kids." She said lovingly.

"I'm not really a kid, you know that." I said, although I smiled thankfully. She was an angel.

"I'll still take care of you."

"I know."

Thank you for starting my book, Peace.
It's a short chapter but I hope to make longer ones in the future.
Please have patience with me as updates could vary. Also if you see any errors like spelling etc, point them out! I don't mind.

Edit: oh my gosh yall hopefully you're not confused. I forgot I originally named May: Kathy and this whole chapter is back and fourth May and Kathy switching and then the rest of the chapters may. 🥲 lol sorry. It's fixed now..
