The day of the races had come around. A day marked with a black star by Tommy on the calendar since the start of the month.
Epsom. The day Tommy Shelby would kill a man.
He hadn't slept all night, you knew that, he kept tossing and turning, throwing the covers off his body only to pull them back over his legs five minutes later. You didn't say anything, however, didn't want to anger him, to stress him out before his big day.
Now, you sat in the kitchen, a half drank cup of tea sat in front of you, half eaten toast going cold on the plate beside the half read newspaper. You didn't know what to do with yourself, didn't know how to act on such an occasion. All you knew was the black star on the calendar. And that today, your husband was going to kill a man. Maybe two men. Maybe three.
Your husband was unpredictable, he didn't like to disclose information that lay on a need to know basis. And you certainly didn't need to know. Tommy was good, he tried to keep you out of his business, told you he didn't want you wrapped up in that part of his life, didn't want to endanger you with the likes of Sabini or Kimber.
He was a good man, Tommy Shelby.
And when you heard his familiar footsteps creak down the stairs, you rose to meet him, not necessarily to greet him - he'd just woken up and it was the day of the black star, he wouldn't want to talk - but you wanted him to acknowledge your presence, to see his breakfast and smile - a small smile would suffice - and you wanted to take his mind off his duty.
However you were quite taken aback when he entered the kitchen and immediately wrapped his arms around your waist, pulling you into his chest and resting his chin atop your hair.
"I love you..." He whispered into your crown, rocking you side to side gently. "If anything happens to me-"
"Tommy, no..." You couldn't help but interupt and right now you wanted to hear anything other than the 'when i'm gone' speech. Pulling from Tommy's embrace, your gaze met his, a hopeful longing encased within his iris'.
"If anything happens to me..." You sighed at his words and from deep within, you felt an overwhelming flood cascade through your body, tingling through your arms and legs, causing brewing oceans to fill your eyes "...I want you to know I love you" It took everything in your power to hold back the tears, but when you saw Tommy's lip falter, a miniscule quiver on the tight knit line, you knew you were a goner.
"I don't say 'I love you' enough, I know I don't. But Y/N, you're the best thing that's ever happened to me..." The tears burst through the embankment of your eyes, petering over your lashline, creating a steady stream down the apples of your cheeks. Tommy chuckled at the sight, bringing his thumb to your aid, wiping away the tears momentarily.
"Nothing will happen at the races..." You began, placing your palms against his chest "...You'll do your job and come home and... And you'll stay safe..." Your voice was hopeful, however your eyes conveyed worry, a worry Tommy could see clearly through your tear stained orbs.
"I will" He nodded, pulling you into his chest once more and rocking you gently back and forth.
