"May! Drew!" A voice called suddenly. His head snapped towards the girl with pink brown hair running towards them with a short blonde girl trailing hesitantly behind.

"Brianna! Hi!" May exclaimed.

"It's so good to see you two!" She smiled brightly.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

"Are you here for the Azalea Town contest?" May asked. Brianna shook her head.

"Nope! Ellie and I are headed to Len Town! The contest there is in about a week and a half," Brianna said. Ellie hung behind Brianna, as if she was unsure if she was allowed into the conversation. She looked about a year younger than Brianna.

"So I see you found a partner! Your name's Ellie?" May asked, inviting the shy girl into the conversation. Ellie's blue eyes lit up in excitement.

"Yes, it's so great to meet you," she said politely. "I never thought I'd get the chance to meet two popular coordinators like you! Coordinators Monthly had a spread last month about the coordinators to watch out for this season and you two got a whole page," she said quietly.

"You're welcome, May," Drew said.

"For what?" May turned to him.

"It's because of me you're so popular," he smirked. She stuck her tongue out at him. She walked around him and stopped behind him.

"Hmm," she said.

"What are you doing?" He asked her, starting to turn around.

"Stop!" She exclaimed.

"What-"

"I can't find it!"

"Find what?"

"The deflate button! Your head's way too big!" Drew's eyes widened at her for a second before he started laughing.

"You really did all of that just for a dumb joke?" He said through laughs. She pouted.

"I thought it was good! Besides, you need to be knocked down a peg!" She huffed.

"Only one? That's an improvement," he said. Brianna looked back and forth at them as they bantered.

"Alright enough you two," Brendan interjected. May stuck her tongue out at Drew one last time for good measure.

"Are you guys going to be at the contest?" Brianna asked, getting them back on track of the original conversation.

"We didn't even know about it, but if we leave now, we should be able to make it by a day before. It's cutting it close," Drew said.

"I see..." Brianna trailed off, disappointedly.

"Plus, I told Brendan I would watch his gym battle," May said.

"Go," Brendan cut it.

"But-"

"You can watch a different one another time, I don't want to hold you back," Brendan smiled.

"Thank you so much, Brendan!" May said, giving him a hug.

"It was good to see you," he said.

"Same,"

"Are you two leaving right now?" Drew asked the girls.

"No, we have to wait for our Pokemon to heal, and then we're going to buy a couple things for the road," Brianna said.

"So we'll meet you in Len Town?" He asked. Brianna nodded. Suddenly, a pokeball opened, and May broke from her hug with Brendan to see Cyndaquil letting itself out. Brianna yelped in surprise.

"Cyn!" It cried as it began to run around and weave through all of their legs.

"Cyndaquil! Stop it!" Drew exclaimed. He bent down to try and catch him, but instead Cyndaquil jumped on him and crawled on top of his head. Drew sighed exasperatedly.

"When'd you get a Cyndaquil!?" Brianna asked, stunned.

"It's a long story, but pretty much since we've been in the Johto region. He's a handful," Drew said through gritted teeth as he tried to pry the fire type off of his head.

"I can see that," Brianna sweat dropped as Cyndaquil decided to jump off Drew's head and into May's arms. He sighed and brought out Cyndaquil's Pokeball. He returned the troublesome Pokemon.

"You can always count on Cyndaquil to liven the mood, and then leave you completely exhausted afterwards," May giggled.

"Well, since we're on the topic," Brianna threw a Pokeball and a Hoppip appeared.

"Aw! It's so cute!!" May gushed. The Hoppip floated over to Brianna and rested in her arms, it's helicopter-like leaves stilling.

"I know right! I'm so happy I caught her," Brianna smiled.

"I'm sure you'll be able to make a great appeal routine with it!"

"Thanks! I hope so!" Brianna said as she returned it.

"Well, we should probably get going," Drew said as he turned to her. May nodded.

"Thanks so much for telling us about the contest! And it was nice to meet you Ellie!" May said. Ellie smiled shyly.

"Good luck at your gym battle," Drew told Brendan. Brendan smirked.

"Thanks! Good luck at your contest," he said.

"Oh, and one more thing, don't get too comfortable, because I won't lose to you," Brendan said confidently. Drew scoffed.

"Yeah, whatever,"

"Ready?" May asked. He nodded. "Bye everyone!" She waved as they headed to the exit. With that, they were on the road again. Just the two of them. It felt like it had been forever since they had been alone. Why she was so glad it was just them two, she didn't know. Not that she didn't like Brendan, but it felt like she hadn't gotten the chance to talk to Drew the way they had been. Also, with Brendan in mind, she was confused about what he meant with the "whole, don't get comfortable, I won't lose." But Drew seemed to know what he was talking about.

"What did he mean?" She asked.

"Huh?"

"When he said that he wouldn't lose?"

"What do you think about Brendan?" He asked, ignoring her question. She was about to protest, but he held up a hand to stop her.

"It's important that you answer my question first," he said seriously.

"Um, we grew up together, he was my childhood best friend. He's a nice guy, and he gets a bit carried away sometimes," she said.

"But how do you feel about him?"

"Wait! You mean like romantically?" Her face flushed red. He nodded. "I, Uh, I've never thought about him like before... he's always been like a brother to me..." she said uncertainly.

"Do you think it could happen?" He asked.

"I don't know! It feels weird trying to imagine it. I don't know. I mean it could... who knows! But that could be years from now, I don't think I can imagine it right now, but who's to say that won't change in a few years. He's a good guy, any girl would be lucky to have him, but I don't think I have romantic feelings for him," she explained.

"I see," he said quietly.

"So now will you answer my question?" She asked.

"Nope,"

"HEY! Why not!?" May fumed.

"It's not for me to tell," he said smugly.

"You're such a jerk sometimes!" She huffed.

"What can I say?" he shrugged with a good natured smirk on his face.

"You could start by apologizing," she said.

"I won't apologize," he grinned. "But seriously, you should think about it. Someone should look out for you when I'm not around anymore," he said more seriously. May's face fell.

"Are you trying to ditch me?" She tried for a joke but it came up flat.

"No! And I'm not saying you can't take care of yourself, I just worry. About you, about Solidad. You're the first friends I've ever had. I don't want anything to happen to you," He said sincerely. She was stunned. She wasn't expecting that to come from him.

"I-"

"Look, it would make me feel better to know someone was looking out for you. Even though I really don't like it, Solidad has Harley. It doesn't even have to be Brendan. It could be Brianna or something. Someone. But since you and Brendan are so close I figured- he might be what's best for you," he said.

"Hey, that's really nice and all that you're worried and you want someone to look after me, but I can also decide what I think is best for myself too. And don't think I'll let you go home quietly either. You're my friend and you deserve to get to do what makes you happy," She said.

"I've had enough adventures to last me a lifetime, I couldn't ask for much more. At least I got to experience that freedom for even just a little while," he smiled wryly.

"Yeah but I don't want you to go! I want to keep competing with you! It doesn't matter if I'm on your team, or on the opposing side of the field. It wouldn't feel the same without you!" May exclaimed. He smiled softly and ruffled her hair.

"Stop it!"

"We'll cross that line when we get to it. We've only just started here, we've still got far to go," he made it clear that he didn't want to talk about anymore, and truthfully, she didn't want to either. Even just thinking about it made her upset. The thought of Drew leaving and never coming back... never seeing him again. She didn't want that. She didn't want that at all.
