In a society where curiosity has no place, Kya is too inquisitive for her own good. The underground world of dust and stone is all she has ever known, a world of darkness fixated on a past it doesn't remember. The sudden earthquake that disrupts her dreary life, however, proves to be more than what she bargained for but it also opens up a new life of light and colour.

Along with Fyren, Kya makes her way aboveground to a life that is astonishingly different to her old one. Once there, Kya gets dragged into the schemes, plots and politics of a nation she doesn't even belong to but to which she is the key to establishing a new social order. Meanwhile, her friendship with Fyren is put to the test as he becomes ostracized and Kya herself is launched into fame and power and danger.

Chance brought her aboveground but only skill can save her. Revolutions and revelations, power and justice, right and wrong; the best choices are not always the right ones, and Kya must choose carefully to preserve not only her own identity, but the lives of all those around her.
