Week 1: Materials use and development

In my opinion,  it is best to see a textbook  as oil for cooking, rather than a  pair of glasses or a lady’s handbag.

 Oil is undeniably important to some certain kind of dishes but not the determinant to the deliciousness of that food. Oil links all the ingredients of food together and makes the it tasty. Similarly, a textbook makes the connection of all components of a course shown in its syllabus,  provides standardized instructions, effective language …to the course but does not work as the determinant factor leading to a lesson’s success. However, the image of a pair of glasses really diminishes the role of textbook which merely works as the tool to check or keep trace of teacher’s teaching. Also, textbook should not be seen as lady’s handbag since a it cannot provide all necessary things for a good lesson.

The benefits of a textbook, therefore, should be seen as being useful source of structure,  language models of the course. Basing on the textbook, teachers will know how to teach systematically and in appropriate standard. Also,  due to its efficiency, a textbook  helps teacher to save time to focus on teaching rather than creating new materials.
