REYLOR'S LAMENT is the first novella of The Empire Saga, taking place not only prior to the events of TWO THOUSAND YEARS, but also filling in the gaps between TWO THOUSAND YEARS and Book Two, MARK OF THE EMPRESS.

This novella, however, can be read in conjunction with TREYAN'S PROMISE. Both stories are character-centric, and though they follow similar timelines, neither is dependent on the other.
