EXT. A FALAFEL SHOP - AFTERNOON

Sarcastic doctor MR MAGNUS CHASE is arguing with smart warrior MX. ALEX FIERRO. MAGNUS tries to hug ALEX but she shakes him off.

MAGNUS
Please Alex, don't leave me.

ALEX
I'm sorry Magnus, but I'm looking for somebody a bit more brave. Somebody who faces his fears head on, instead of running away.

MAGNUS
I am such a person!

ALEX frowns.

ALEX
I'm sorry, Magnus. I just don't feel excited by this relationship anymore.

ALEX leaves.

MAGNUS sits down, looking defeated.

Moments later, energetic pilot MRS SAMIRAH AL-ABBAS barges in looking flustered.

MAGNUS
Goodness, Samirah! Is everything okay?

SAMIRAH
I'm afraid not.

MAGNUS
What is it? Don't keep me in suspense...

SAMIRAH
It's ... a squirrel ... I saw an evil squirrel badmouth a bunch of elderly ladies!

MAGNUS
Defenseless elderly ladies?

SAMIRAH
Yes, defenseless elderly ladies!

MAGNUS
Bloomin' heck, Samirah! We've got to do something.

SAMIRAH
I agree, but I wouldn't know where to start.

MAGNUS
You can start by telling me where this happened.

SAMIRAH
I was...

SAMIRAH fans herself and begins to wheeze.

MAGNUS
Focus Samirah, focus! Where did it happen?

SAMIRAH
Massachusetts, Boston! That's right - Massachusetts, Boston!

MAGNUS springs up and begins to run.

EXT. A ROAD - CONTINUOUS

MAGNUS rushes along the street, followed by SAMIRAH. They take a short cut through some back gardens, jumping fences along the way.

EXT. MASSACHUSETTS, BOSTON - SHORTLY AFTER

LOKI LAUFEYSON a wild squirrel terrorises two elderly ladies.

MAGNUS, closely followed by SAMIRAH, rushes towards LOKI, but suddenly stops in his tracks.

SAMIRAH
What is it? What's the matter?

MAGNUS
That's not just any old squirrel, that's Loki Laufeyson!

SAMIRAH
Who's Loki Laufeyson?

MAGNUS
Who's Loki Laufeyson? Who's Loki Laufeyson? Only the most wild squirrel in the universe!

SAMIRAH
Blinkin' knickers, Magnus! We're going to need some help if we're going to stop the most wild squirrel in the universe!

MAGNUS
You can say that again.

SAMIRAH
Blinkin' knickers, Magnus! We're going to need some help if we're going to stop the most wild squirrel in the universe!

MAGNUS
I'm going to need wire, lots of wire.

Loki turns and sees Magnus and Samirah. He grins an evil grin.

LOKI
Magnus Chase, we meet again.

SAMIRAH
You've met?

MAGNUS
Yes. It was a long, long time ago...

EXT. A PARK - BACK IN TIME

A young MAGNUS is sitting in a park listening to some jazz music, when suddenly a dark shadow casts over him.

He looks up and sees LOKI. He takes off his headphones.

LOKI
Would you like some jelly babies?

MAGNUS's eyes light up, but then he studies LOKI more closely, and looks uneasy.

MAGNUS
I don't know, you look kind of wild.

LOKI
Me? No. I'm not wild. I'm the least wild squirrel in the world.

MAGNUS
Wait, you're a squirrel?

MAGNUS runs away, screaming.

EXT. MASSACHUSETTS, BOSTON - PRESENT DAY

LOKI
You were a coward then, and you are a coward now.

SAMIRAH
(To MAGNUS) You ran away?

MAGNUS
(To SAMIRAH) I was a young child. What was I supposed to do?

MAGNUS turns to LOKI.

MAGNUS
I may have run away from you then, but I won't run away this time!

MAGNUS runs away.

He turns back and shouts.

MAGNUS
I mean, I am running away, but I'll be back - with wire.

LOKI
I'm not scared of you.

MAGNUS
You should be.

EXT. - LATER THAT DAY

MAGNUS and SAMIRAH walk around searching for something.

MAGNUS
I feel sure I left my wire somewhere around here.

SAMIRAH
Are you sure? It does seem like an odd place to keep deadly wire.

MAGNUS
You know nothing Samirah Al-Abbas.

SAMIRAH
We've been searching for ages. I really don't think it's here.

Suddenly, LOKI appears, holding a piece of wire.

LOKI
Looking for something?

SAMIRAH
Crikey, Magnus, he's got your wire.

MAGNUS
Tell me something I don't already know!

SAMIRAH
The earth's circumference at the equator is about 40,075 km.

MAGNUS
I know that already!

SAMIRAH
I accidentally ate fifteen falafels at the same time and choked.

LOKI
(appalled) Dude!

While LOKI is looking at SAMIRAH with disgust, MAGNUS lunges forward and grabs his deadly wire. He wields them, triumphantly.

MAGNUS
Prepare to die, you wild potato!

LOKI
No please! All I did was badmouth a bunch of elderly ladies!

ALEX enters, unseen by any of the others.

MAGNUS
I cannot tolerate that kind of behaviour! Those elderly ladies were defenceless! Well now they have a defender - and that's me! Magnus Chase defender of innocent elderly ladies.

LOKI
Don't hurt me! Please!

MAGNUS
Give me one good reason why I shouldn't use these wire on you right away!

LOKI
Because Magnus, I am your father.

MAGNUS looks stunned for a few moments, but then collects himself.

MAGNUS
No you're not!

LOKI
Ah well, it had to be worth a try.

LOKI tries to grab the wire but MAGNUS dodges out of the way.

MAGNUS
Who's the daddy now? Huh? Huh?

Unexpectedly, LOKI slumps to the ground.

SAMIRAH
Did he just faint?

MAGNUS
I think so. Well that's disappointing. I was rather hoping for a more dramatic conclusion, involving my deadly wire.

MAGNUS crouches over LOKI's body.

SAMIRAH
Be careful, Magnus. It could be a trick.

MAGNUS
No, it's not a trick. It appears that... It would seem... Loki Laufeyson is dead!

SAMIRAH
What?

MAGNUS
Yes, it appears that I scared him to death.

SAMIRAH claps her hands.

SAMIRAH
So your wire did save the day, after all.

ALEX steps forward.

ALEX
Is it true? Did you kill the wild squirrel?

MAGNUS
Alex how long have you been...?

ALEX puts her arm around MAGNUS.

ALEX
Long enough.

MAGNUS
Then you saw it for yourself. I killed Loki Laufeyson.

ALEX
Then the elderly ladies are safe?

MAGNUS
It does seem that way!

A crowd of vulnerable elderly ladies enter, looking relieved.

ALEX
You are their hero.

The elderly ladies bow to MAGNUS.

MAGNUS
There is no need to bow to me. I seek no worship. The knowledge that Loki Laufeyson will never badmouth elderly ladies ever again, is enough for me.

ALEX
You are humble as well as brave!

One of the elderly ladies passes MAGNUS a shiny pendant

ALEX
I think they want you to have it, as a symbol of their gratitude.

MAGNUS
I couldn't possibly.

Pause.

MAGNUS
Well, if you insist.

MAGNUS takes the pendant.

MAGNUS
Thank you.

The elderly ladies bow their heads once more, and leave.

MAGNUS turns to ALEX.

MAGNUS
Does this mean you want me back?

ALEX
Oh, Magnus, of course I want you back!

MAGNUS smiles for a few seconds, but then looks defiant.

MAGNUS
Well you can't have me.

ALEX
WHAT?

MAGNUS
You had no faith in me. You had to see me scare a squirrel to death before you would believe in me. I don't want a lover like that.

ALEX
But...

MAGNUS
Please leave. I want to spend time with the one person who stayed with me through thick and thin - my best friend, Samirah.

SAMIRAH grins.

ALEX
But...

SAMIRAH
You heard the gentleman. Now be off with you. Skidaddle! Shoo!

ALEX
Magnus?

MAGNUS
I'm sorry Alex, but I think you should skidaddle.

ALEX leaves.

SAMIRAH turns to MAGNUS.

SAMIRAH
Did you mean that? You know ... that I'm your best friend?

MAGNUS
Of course you are!

The two walk off arm in arm.

Suddenly SAMIRAH stops.

SAMIRAH
When I said I accidentally ate fifteen falafels at the same time and choked, you know I was just trying to distract the squirrel don't you?
