 Chapter 2: Surprise!

After three hours of driving, Melanie finally stopped complaining about her full bladder as they made a pit stop at the local Target. Melanie ran inside the store as fast as she could.

"I'm gonna get some snacks, meet me in the line!" Molly yelled, going to the candy aisle. She picked up some granola bars, kit kats, m&ms, snickers, assorted chips, and pre-made wrapped sandwiches in the basket.

Making her way to the line, she saw her best friend flirting with a boy in the front, an average height boy and sandy blonde hair. "Mel, help," she whined when she approached the register. Melanie turned around, apologized, and grabbed some things from the basket, placing them on the conveyor belt.

While in line, Melanie learned his name was Tim. He goes to Bowie University. The cashier rang up their items and told them the total. Tim gave Melanie his number before the girls left the store.

"I'll call you," Melanie said, waving goodbye to him.

"You're not gonna call him," Molly stated, shaking her head.

"I will. Maybe," Melanie responded with a smirk as they made their way back to the car.

Back on the road four more hours to spare, both girls switching to drive to take one-hour naps, Molly now in the driver's seat as Melanie slept. She spotted the 'Welcome to Pennsylvania' sign. She smiled to herself, eager to see her boyfriend and what they will do for the next ten days. "Mel, wake up." Molly shook her shoulder.

"No, leave me alone," Melanie grumbled, swatting her hand away.

"Mel, We're here." Melanie opened her eyes slowly and lifted her head, Molly pulling into the campus and parking close enough to his dorm building. They grabbed their bags and entered the building.

"Hi, I'm looking for a Cole Forbes room," Molly asked the resident advisor. His nose in a book hunched over his desk.

"Room 119," he answered in a bored tone. They both thanked him and walked off.

"This better be worth it, Molly," Melanie told her, both girls walking through the hall.

"It will be. I can be with Cole and you can meet anyone that catches your eyes," she assured her.

"Ooh, like him." Melanie spotted the brunette guy. He's shirtless with a towel around his waist. "Hello," she waved with her fingers.

"Hey," he responded, smirking, passing them by, Melanie checking out his wet muscular back.

"He's hot," she approved.

Molly giggled, "Let's find his room." She pulled her arm forward to walk faster.

"Molly?" The girls see the source of the voice in front of them. It's Cole's roommate, Matt.

"Matty! Hi, it's so good to see you," Molly hugged him tightly. She ruffled his messy mop of hair. He chuckled, pushing it back. His eyes met Melanie, she smiled tightly at him.

"Hey Matt," said Melanie.

"Mel, what's up?" his tone matched his ex-girlfriend: dull. They dated for a few months in high school. Their feelings for each other were mutual. Matt had a jealous streak when Melanie talked to other boys. Fights were about accused infidelity, Melanie kept telling him she only wanted him, Matt didn't believe her. The break up sucked. Now they could see each other without a verbal harsh argument. "What are you guys doing here?"

"It's spring break. We thought we would take a brief road trip. Came to see my boyfriend," Molly answered with a clap to her palms, swaying side to side.

"You thought," Melanie corrected.

"Fine, I thought. Mel's tagging along," Molly pointed out.

"Oh." Matt's tone was suspicious as his skin became blotchy.

Molly shrugged it off and asked, "Is he in his room?"

He hesitated to answer, eyes wondered, "yeah." He walked away from the girls immediately.

"What's with him?" Melanie questioned, pointing her thumb over her shoulder.

"Don't know. Let's go." Approaching the room, Molly knocked a 'shave in the haircut' tune. Rocking on her heels back and forth as she waited, Cole answered in his boxers and shirtless. His eyes widened. He couldn't speak or move.

"Surprise!" Molly jumped on his body, her bags dropped on the floor, wrapping her legs around his waist and kissed him everywhere on his body. "I missed you so much!"

"I miss you too, babe," he forced out in a cheerful tone. Holding her tight, he almost fell backward. Cole and Molly meeting their lips, sloppy and smacking kisses. Cole grabbing her bottom, Molly held on tighter to his neck.

"Okay, enough with the heavy petting. We just drove so many hours here and I want to lie down." Melanie announced, she made her way into the room, throwing the luggage on the side and flopped on the bed.

"Melanie."

"Cole," Melanie spoke back. Their greetings were playfully cold and standoffish whenever they were face to face.

"I wasn't expecting you to come," he told Molly while dropping to her feet slowly.

"I just wanted to visit. It's been so long." Still holding onto his neck, Molly kissed him once more, peeking over to see Melanie roll her eyes while scrolling on her phone.

Molly noticed Cole's flushed and sweaty face. Shifting his feet, she frowned at his weird actions.

"Are we sharing beds? I'm not sleeping with Matt," Melanie stated.

"Wait, you guys are staying here?" Cole asked, his voice became high, looking back and forth frantically to the girls.

"Is that a problem?" Molly asked.

"Uh, no I-I-it's just kinda sudden and-and- I don't want you to be uncomfortable," he stuttered.

"Babe, what's wrong?" Molly squinted her eyes.

"I need a nap. Where do we put our bags?" Melanie stood and opened the closet door.

"Wait, don't-" Cole shouted to halt Melanie. It was too late: a half-naked redhead stood inside, shrieked when the closet door opened. Melanie's jaw dropped to the floor, her head going back and forth to him and the girl in the closet. Molly's body was still, her chin quivered, Cole was ready to speak in denial. Opening and closing his mouth, he moved his hands in the air.

"Please tell me she's for Matt," Melanie pointed her thumb to the strange girl.

"Cole?" Molly questioned, tears filling her eyes. 'Is that why he was shirtless and sweaty?'

"Uh, Molly, I can explain," Cole started with a shaking laugh.

"All right," she told him, arms crossed and raised eyebrows.

"I met her at this party a few weeks ago. We've been... hooking up." Molly's mind went blank, not knowing what to say. She thought she might pass out, her vision blurred.

"This is awkward." the redhead spoke with disdain, "are you finally done with her?"

"Get out, bitch!" Screamed Melanie as she grabbed the redhead's hair and threw her out, shutting the door.

'This was what he was doing while I was missing him? 'Molly felt the sting of pain in her eyes and heart. She blinked quickly, shaking her head, and picked up her bag, not looking back.

"Dickhead." Melanie bumped Cole aside with her shoulder bag in hand too. She followed behind, exiting the dorm room.

"Molly, I'm sorry-" Cole began running after them in an apologetic tone, Melanie cut him off quickly.

"Back off." Melanie pushed his chest away.

"She's my girlfriend," Cole stated.

"Ex-girlfriend, jackass."

"Don't call me that. She can speak for herself."

"She can and-" Melanie started angrily.

Molly held her back by the arm, "it's ok."

"Let's go, Mol."

"Hold on," Molly approached Cole as he had his signature look on his face: pupils wide and mouth in a downturn. That look made her weak in the knees, but now she wanted to punch the shit out of him. Molly's blood boiled, forming her fists and her nails digging into her palms.

As her fist connected to his face, he fell straight to the floor, clutching his nose in pain. Oohs surrounded the hall as some bystanders watched the scene unfold, Melanie mumbled a "good one."

Molly surprised herself at how hard she hit him. She shook her hand, the slight pain in her knuckles stung as she winced.

"Let's leave the virus before it spreads." Melanie pulled Molly's arm forward from the hallway, making their way to the parking lot, and entered the car. As they got in, Molly felt catatonic, sitting on the passenger side. Staring into the windshield unblinking, her eyes felt wet. Instead of wiping them away, she let them fall.
