I Fly

I fly,
A bird free of duty,
Swooping over the highest branches,
A blur of color in the sky,
Nothing can mar the essence of beauty.

But a storm fast approaches,
And I dive towards the ground,
A stone, plummeting to the depths of the sea,
A harmless asteroid.

Thunder rumbles, lightning cracks,
I tremble upon the ground,
Rain dampens my wings,
I am a prisoner of the earth.

The sun peeks out from a cloud,
It is shoved away by gray fog,
Valiantly, it tries to appear,
But is defeated, over and over.

I hang my head in anguish,
A mournful warble,
In the inky night,
Darkness comes before the dawn.

With the day comes great light,
Bursting forth,
My heart sings for joy,
I spread my wings, and fly.
