               Nothing compared to the feeling of the rough pad of your thumb as it traced the flecks of umber upon my rose petals for cheeks. Electrifying sensations prickling underneath my skin like an adrenaline rush. Your cerulean eyes melting against my shy gaze—I was on fire preparing to feel your lips on mine. Like I was fifteen, sitting on the creaky doorstep of my parent's old farmhouse, impatiently waiting for my high school crush to plant a kiss on my virgin mouth, all over again.

               A refuge I didn't expect to find in a town I decided to use as an escape. A savior in the place I chose to wipe the slate clean after leaving my horrific life behind.

               With a doctorate of veterinary medicine from Cornell University, my practice settled in a reformed coastal cottage in Santa Barbara, and a small family of my own sprouting within the woodworks, anyone would have thought my life was picture perfect. But if you'd look closely, you could see the thick putty of my fair foundation hiding the dark purple bruise faintly on the side of my cheek.

What people envied me for, I was dreading. My emerald eyes puffy and crimson while I placed the pack of frozen vegetables on the wound left by the man who was supposed to be my knight in shining armor. Tears began to fail me, my eyes felt like sandpaper beneath my lids. How could he do this to me?

Years I endured the abuse, hiding the cruelty of his "love" from our five-year-old daughter and the outside world. All that time I believed I was the problem, that I deserved his malevolence. The memory of his drunken, evil eyes haunted me in my dreams.

The day I signed the abhorrent divorce papers was the day I could breathe again for the first time in years. Liberated from his wicked venom, Dean Moore could never lay a hand on me (or my daughter) ever again.

Never did I imagine that I would ever be in the arms of another man, let alone speak to one. Like a devil and an angel on my shoulder, battling in whispers to my ears.

Devil: All men are evil! Evil, vindictive assholes! Let the next one be a woman. (Wishful thinking.)

                In the flourishing orange blossoms, my eyes haze into euphoria while yours bore into me. A teasing, yet sympathetic smile etched its way onto your skin. You pitied me, I thought. You see the fortress that is my dismantled heart. Layers of ivy armoring the concrete barricade you dared to climb. You see the scars on my wounded soul, and instead of tearing me apart—you decide to make me a promise. Maybe, just maybe, this time will be different.
