So basically, here's how it goes
Roman and Remus are close
Closer than most siblings. They trust each other with their lives and nothing could separate them. But now, Remus feels all the evil inside of him finally raising to the surface.
The line "to the point where I don't know if I'll upset the status quo if I throw poison in the water main" shows just how much the intrusiveness of his thoughts is effecting. He's slowly coming to realize how untrustworthy some sides, especially Patton can be, no matter how much he puts on this persona of a loving and accepting friendly figure. Roman meanwhile, is starry eyed when he first meets the light sides. He just thinks they're so cool and awesome and they honestly feel like a saving grace to him, especially Logan ;). "Just when you feel you've almost drowned and then you find yourself on solid ground" refers to him feeling so lost for a purpose and feeling his brother grow more...distant recently, on top of the overwhelming criticisms he places upon himself every day, meeting the light sides really helped him out and his self imagine, I mean who wouldn't feel better about themselves when someone as awesome as Patton said he belonged over with them? But he doesn't want to go without his brother. Meanwhile the darkness keeps consuming Remus, he tries to tell Roman he can't do it, that he's a bad guy, but Roman won't listen. He loves his brother and won't have any of that self deprecation. "-Soon the dark in me is all that will remain!" He warns his brother, but he's just too stubborn to listen. Remus realizes he has to hurt him in order to protect him, see the boy succeed and finally become the side he was always meant to be. He doesn't hang out with Roman anymore, taunts him, but Roman feels like something is up cause he's not a total dunce. They get into an argument, both boy's breaking into tears and yelling at each other. And that's when he does it. Remus leaves him for the dark sides, leaving the two of them utterly broken. Now Roman doesn't talk about the brother he has...had, in a way, only bringing it up when he's forced to. Remus Hurt him. Roman was angry with him but On top of that, he was hurt. He felt as though he wasn't good enough for anyone anymore, the person that was supposed to be his bestest friend just...leaving him, so he eventually does join the light sides. Meanwhile, Remus is a wreck. Deceit caught him crying in his room the first night he came to the dark sides, the boy who was rather soft going over to comfort him, telling him he understood how he felt. For he was friends with a boy whom he had to leave too out of fear of hurting him. Patton. Of course, Deceit hadn't suggested he go to the dark sides, rather worrying every time he made Thomas lie, and went to Patton for advice and well...Patton told him to leave the light sides. It hurt Dee but he cares about both Patton and Thomas so of course he listened.

Meanwhile with Remus, he slowly starts acting a lot less compassionate towards the light sides and acting like the trash man we know, but inside he's broken. He wants his brother back, he needs him back. But Roman hates him now and probably for the best, at least he's safe from Remus's destructive ways. Still...on the anniversary of the day he left, Roman is always...much more distraught than usual. Roman tries to tell himself he shouldn't feel upset. Why should he grieve? Wasn't Remus the monster that he knew after all, leaving him like that? Logan eventually finds Roman talking to a picture he still had of the two twins when they were younger, seeing the usually annoying (at least that's what he forces himself to believe about Roman) man in tears, saying these things that absolutely broke Logan's heart that he didn't even knew existed.
