Mom was beaming when I got home after going to Sonic. I hadn't seen her this exuberant since she came back from our Hawaii trip last spring. She pruned a vase of flowers in the kitchen while Cameron sat at the barstool with his chin in his palm.

"So, you and Abby, huh?" Mom said in a tone like she had just uncovered some juicy gossip. She glanced up at me over the Boquete.

"Yep." I never gave my mom much information on the girls I dated. She always made a bigger deal out of it than it was. It was as if everyone of them were going to be my next wife.

"You'll have to ask her what color her dress is so we can order a corsage and coordinate a matching tie. I'll take your suit to the cleaners and polish your shoes."

"Okay." I opened the fridge and pulled out a plate with steak and brussel sprouts, and zapped them in the microwave.

"Sooner than later, or they won't be able to order the flowers in and put it together."

             "Okay."

"Hon, you're driving me crazy with these one-word answers. Why don't you open up about your love life?"

Because she would probably not approve. "Because it's no big deal."

"You're taking your best friend's sister and it's no big deal?" She said it like that was completely unbelievable.

"It is no big deal. Have you asked Cameron who he's taking?"

She looked over at him. "Cameron, who are you taking?"

He sighed. "No one. I'm just meeting my friends there."

No surprise there. He's never asked anyone to a dance. "Well, how come you haven't asked anyone?" I pressed on, hoping it would take the focus off me.

"Yes," Mom said. "Why not, hon? I'm sure there are loads of girls that would go with you. You're cute."

"Firstly," Cameron said, "don't ever call me cute again. Secondly, there is no one I'm even half way interested in, so just forget about it. There is something I want to talk to you about."

The microwave dinged and I got out my plate and took a bite.

             "What?" Mom asked.

             "I want to join cheerleading."

I stopped chewing and Mom's hand stopped arranging the flowers in the vase. Her mouth opened but she stood there for a minute staring.

"Can you please say something?" Cameron said in a low voice.

"I don't think it's a good idea," she finally said, rearranging her flowers again. "You'll get bullied."

"You don't want me to because you think it's a girl's sport," Cameron grasped onto the counter like he was about to fling it like a Frisbee.

"That's not true," she said. "It's not even a real sport."

I raised my eyebrows at my mom's words. There was much debate recently about whether cheerleading was a sport or not. I tended to believe it being a sport after watching everything the cheerleaders were required to do, including gymnastics, stunting, and synchronized dance routines. Students tended to stereotype cheerleaders as no-talent rich girls that thought of themselves as superior to the rest of the human race. After watching the cheerleaders get bullied in the stands when people made fun of their routines, no wonder they had attitudes. The faces of cheerleaders were changing. Girls that were plus-sized were now joining the team, but their mothers weren't telling them not to join the team because they would be bullied.

"I don't care if I get bullied," Cameron said. "I want to do it. I just need to take some gymnastics classes so I can pass the tryouts."

Mom stared at him for a few seconds as if trying to make sense of his words, until she uttered, "fine. You can take some classes at the Rec."
