*********

Hugh hated the winter.

He hated spending his days in itchy sweaters sneezing himself to death. He hated slushy puddles seeping into his worn out boots. It was easily the worst time of the year. So when Rosa invited him to a "winter extravaganza" day, he was very inclined to say no. Very inclined to stay under his covers, watch TV and try and hibernate until spring.

But this was Rosa. Hugh never could say no to the energetic brunette. So that is how he ended up in the cold, at the bottom of a ski slope, wearing as many jackets as he could pull on. Darn that Rosa.

The girl beside him wore only a only a winter coat and a cheerful smile.

"Oh... doesn't it feel great up here??" Rosa exclaimed excitedly, looking around in awe.

Hugh attempted to grumble a reply from behind his scarf, but the words were inaudible.

Rosa merely laughed and shook her head. "How do you even plan to move in all of that?" She said, snickering at her bundled-up friend.

"Mm-mph..." Hugh replied. Rosa laughed again and walked up, unwinding his scarf. "At least I won't get hypothermia. I mean, who would even come do this for fun?? Polar bears??" He said.

"We do dummy."

"Remind me why again?"

"Because I told you so."

"Oh yeah."

Rosa grinned and unzipped and pulled off Hugh's outermost coat. "You need to be able to move in order to ski."

"Ridiculous! I am going to freeze woman!" Hugh exclaimed, but didn't stop Rosa. It was no use. Once the blue haired boy sported only a thick jacket, Rosa stepped back.

"There. Now you don't look like a marshmallow."

"I'm s-still f-freezing..." Hugh chattered in reply.

Rosa rolled her eyes and wrapped her arms around him. "There you big baby. You warm now?"

Hugh's face tinted red. "Yeah yeah..." he mumbled, looking away. "Lets just get this over with."

The two teens stepped into their skis and shuffled towards the lift. As they neared the front of the line Rosa looked up at the benches climbing higher and higher up the white expanse. She gulped and squeezed her eyes shut.

"What?" Hugh questioned, shooting her a side-glance.

Rosa turned red and mumbled something in reply. Meanwhile, the line inched forward.

"Speak up, I can't hear you," Hugh sighed.

Rosa mumbled something, a little louder this time, but her words trailed off.

The two friends reached the front of the line and were instructed to stand in front of the oncoming chairs.

"Rosa, what is it?" Hugh asked again, slightly irritated. The bench lightly knocked into their legs, causing them to sit down. As the bar was pulled over their heads, Rosa gasped.

"I'm afraid of heights!" She squealed, as they left the pad behind them.

"WHAT?!"

"I thought I would be fine. I forgot how high it was," Rosa moaned, scrunching up her eyes and leaning into Hugh.

"You have got to be kidding me," Hugh groaned, slapping his palm to his forehead. "Haven't you been skiiing before??"

"Once... when I was 6..." Rosa muttered sheepishly. "But I only went on the bunny hills." The brunette managed a small apologetic smile before burying her face in her friend's jacket.

"Why do we even let you out of the house..." Hugh replied, slouching down in his seat. As frustrated as he was with his ditzy friend, he couldn't help but feel bad for her though. The brunette hadn't opened her eyes once since they lifted off and Hugh could feel her shaking.

"Hey..." his tone softened. "You okay?"

"Super," she replied in a shaky voice.

"Rosa..." Hugh took a hold of the girl's shoulders and gently pulled her back. "Rosa, open your eyes, its not that bad..."

Rosa tried to calm her breathing and slowly opened one eye. "Y-you're right... It's not that b-bad..." she replied, hesitantly, her teeth chattering together.

Unfortunately, at that moment, the bench came to a stop, swinging back and forth gently. Rosa screamed and flung her arms around Hugh, who merely gripped the bar in front of him nervously.

"Are we dead? Why did it stop? Hugh, don't you dare let go of me. Are we dead?" Rosa babbled nervously, her eyes closed again. Hugh craned his neck behind them and found that nobody else on the lift seemed alarmed.

"I think they just do this every once in a while. It should start again soon." Sure enough, a couple seconds later, the lift jerked to life again. "See? Nothing to worry about." Rosa gave a small nod, but didn't open her eyes again for the rest of the ride.

After what seemed like an eternity of stopping and starting, the lift finally made it's way to the top of the hill. At this point, Rosa was hyperventilating and Hugh merely crossed his fingers she wouldn't pass out before they made it on solid ground. "Rosa, time to get off," Hugh said, nudging her. Rosa peeked an eye open as the bench descended. Seconds later, Hugh grabbed the brunette's hand and they slid of the lift in one swift motion. Rosa gasped, letting out a sigh of relief.

"We're alive," she sighed, plopping down on the snow.

Hugh smiled. "Don't get your hopes up yet, we still need to make it down the hill. Have you forgotten that neither of us really know how to ski?" Rosa let out a wail, causing her friend to chuckle. "Come on. Lets get this over with," the blue-haired boy said, helping Rosa off the ground.

"Thanks for not making fun or getting mad at me," the brunette said quietly to Hugh as he pulled her along.

"What are best friend's for?" He replied, smirking back at her. The two slowly shuffled forward until they reached the top of the slope. Luckily, it wasn't too complicated, but still both teens were terrified. Rosa looked over at Hugh, who was merely glaring at the hill like it was a tough opponent. "Let's do this. Come on," he said, taking the lead. Rosa gulped and nodded, slowly allowing her skiis to glide forward.

"Time to unleash my rage..." Hugh muttered, gradually gaining speed. While Hugh was getting the hand of things, Rosa immediately fell on her behind. She huffed and fell back in the snow. About to reside to scooting down the entire hill, Rosa watched her friend and rival put more distance between them.

She smirked. No way was she losing that easily. "Watch your back Hugh." Rosa pushed herself up and leaned forward again. "A Champion doesn't give up that easily."

**********

By the time the two teens reached the bottom of the slope they were both soaked through with snow and covered with bruises from where they had fallen. But with red cheeks and sore muscles, they plopped down and laughed.

"Did you see that snow drift I hit?" Hugh exclaimed, holding his stomach from laughter.

"You looked like you had just eaten a massive powdered donut," Rosa replied, giggling.

"At least I didn't knock over a guy," Hugh said, shooting a pointed look at the brunette, who punched him in the shoulder.

"Don't remind me..." she groaned. Both let out a contented sigh and lay back in the snow.

"You know what I want to do?" Rosa asked.

"If you say go again I might kill you."

Rosa laughed. "No. I want to go watch TV under a warm blanket with hot cocoa."

Hugh grinned and leaned up on his elbow. "I wholeheartedly approve of that idea."

*********

And that is how Hugh and Rosa wound up back home, snuggled under some blankets, watching TV, and trying to hibernate till winter.

"Hugh?"

"Hm?"

"Thanks for today."

And with that Rosa planted a kiss on Hugh's cheek.

Hugh smiled. "Anytime."
