This won't be so much a review as me screaming about how much I love this movie.

*There will be spoilers in this for things such as characters, character development, and scenes in the movie. But any major spoilers (e.g. plot twists, big reveals) I will mark.*

Okay okay so Héctor is my favorite character in this movie by far. Not gonna lie though, when I first saw him trying to escape security and get across the bridge I thought he was pretty sketchy and thought he was a bad guy.

But part of the reason I now love him so much might be because of him sorta fitting the Grumpy Father Figure trope, which I always love. Like I know he isn't really grouchy, but at the beginning he is really only out to help himself get across to the Land of the Living and Miguel is just a means to an end ("I help you. You help me. We help each other, but most importantly, you help me.") But as the movie progresses, he really starts to care for Miguel (CHARACTER DEVELOPEMENT YASSSSS)

But just a lot of times in books and movies the 'wise guide' character can end up becoming too perfect and wise but Hector just had so much depth to his character, good and bad, and I loved that. He made mistakes but he learned from them.

And then there's Mamá Imelda. She is probably my second favorite character and once again is super well rounded. I love her saltiness ("TELL THIS WOMAN AND HER DEVIL BOX THAT MY PHOTO IS ON THE OFRENDA") and when she is giving Miguel the blessing at the beginning her voice is just so done with this stuff and it's the greatest.

Just all the characters development is literally the best and I love it.

★★MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD★★

Ok so just
I 200% did NOT see that coming.

Although I really should have because whenever Mama Imelda tried to give Miguel her blessing at the beginning the petal glowed immediately when she said "I give you my blessing" (in her salty voice™) but when Ernesto started to give it to Miguel before Hector burst in it didn't start to glow.

But like
I was so caught off guard that Ernesto murdered Hector and then had them both chucked in that pit that I wasn't even thinking that Hector could be Miguel's grandpa.

And then he was and I was like WHAT YES THIS IS PERFECT HOW DID I NOT SEE IT YOU ADORABLE CINNAMON ROLLS ARE RELATED OF COURSE and I'm still dying of happiness because of it

And when I thought Hector was gonna die again I swear I was freaking out like no this is my favorite character if you kill him (I mean I know he's already dead but you know what I mean) I will freak out
But he lived (not really but whatever) so it's all good 😁

And I really should have seen it coming because Ernesto was portrayed as the Perfect Wise One ™ who's always right and can do no wrong (at least in Miguel's eyes) hahahahahah yeah no but he had me fooled.

But I was a little suspicious when Ernesto was saying how the world is a musician's family and other sorta sketchy nonsense and I was just thinking "a Disney movie telling kids family isn't important? Something isn't right" and oh look whaddoyou know Ernesto is evil

One of my favorite scenes is the part where Miguel and Hector play together at the competition bc it's so sweet and it's like 10x more amazing when you rewatch it knowing Hector is his grandfather

Oh and rememBER ME AS A LULLABY oh my gosh I love that song so much it just breaks my heart at the end as Hector moves away from Little Coco and she's alone and sad 💔

And just the ending of the movie I tear up every time because Hector just is so happy and disbelieving and Mama Coco is there and I'm melting from happiness when Hector plays with Miguel and it reminds me of the music competition scene when they performed together which I loved

So yeah thanks for listening to me rant about the awesomeness this movie is and if you haven't seen it PLEASE DO and let me know what you think!
