Thoughts on a Ranger's Apprentice Movie

because sometimes my brain likes to come at me with random thoughts/feels on Ranger's Apprentice even when I haven't read the series in a while:

So, a while back (like 2016 I think?) there was something announced about a RA movie (this was before I was really into the books so I only knew about it after the fact). People got excited, but then there wasn't anything announced about it for a really long time and everyone pretty much figured it wasn't gonna happen.

But then a month or so ago I was bored and googled "ranger's apprentice movie" and found an article from October 2019 saying that the movie had "received funding and is expected to begin filming in 2020." (which of course, in the current situation I doubt there'll be any filming starting soon, but anyways)

Here's the link if anyone is interested.

Setting aside the question of "is this legit" (I think it is? cuz there's a link from that source to another one but honestly idk), my first reaction was excitement. Ranger's Apprentice is such a good series that doesn't get enough appreciation, and I could see it being REALLY GOOD in movie form. I wouldn't be surprised if they combined the plots from a couple books, but honestly I could live with that. There is a lot of plot happening and there are a lot of books, so I'd understand them combining and shortening a little.

But I thought about it some more, and honestly I'm kinda scared of the idea of getting a movie for RA??? This may be partially fed by the new Artemis Fowl movie (which I'm simultaneously excited and nervous about), but I'm just terrified of them messing up the characters.

I have a super specific mental image/vibe for literally all the RA characters, and John Flanagan just fleshes them all out so well and they feel very real and I'm emotionally attached to all of them. Maybe it's partially because this is one of the few long book series that I've read without any kind of movie to influence how I imagine the characters, but I just have a certain way of visualizing them even down to the sound of their voices.

If there was a movie, how could they get all that right? A lot of the books I've read already have movie adaptations (such as Harry Potter) where the movies, even subconsciously, influenced how I imagine the characters. I've never really had to watch the process of making a movie adaptation of a book series I love (other than Artemis Fowl which, again, may be a part of my lack of faith).

I dunno, I just don't know how they could accurately cast anyone who could pinpoint Halt's acerbic personality but show how he actually does care about a lot of people, or just accurately portrau the sarcasm between characters that's part of what makes RA so fun to read. This series just kinda means a lot to me and I'm terrified of a movie messing it up, not even so much plot-wise but just the characters.

I'm gonna try to be optimistic, and maybe if this is for real sometime soon we'll get a cast announcement and I'll update my opinion. Just—whatever movie company is making this, pLEASE DON'T RUIN MY SONS (AND DAUGHTERS)

Sorry that this got kinda rambly, quarantine is messing with my head. And if you haven't read Ranger's Apprentice, PLEASE DO SO AS SOON AS YOU CAN it's so good.

And of course, the movie might never happen and I'm just sitting in bed when I should be asleep thinking about this for no reason at all and spamming you all with it 👍 sorry not sorry
