Astral. A voice rang through her mind. The she-dragon rose out of her slumber, her blue eyes forced open. Her purple talons rested on her long body, curled into a pile, like a snake's. She looked up sleepily to find her mother hovering above her: Virgo.

Her mother's golden scales flashed in the sky. The sky was light green. On Nova, the planet they were on, the light green sky was a window to the galaxy- dragons could fly up and beyond until the pale green gradually turned into darkness, specks of different colors surrounding their bodies as if wrapping a star-speckled blanket around them.

Astral didn't have the nerve the fly up, even though she masted the ability to hold her breath for a long time. What happened if she died up there? Would her body be brought down, a limp purple body with blank blue eyes? Frozen? Burned to ashes? No one knew.

But Virgo had always told her that no dragon had ever died while being out in space. As the head of Astral's family, which lived inside a brightly-lit cave, Virgo had the responsibility of the family. Purple and blue torches lit up the room, with a big chunk of glowstone - a yellow type of light-emitting stone - hanging off the ceiling in the middle of the room. Bundles of leaves and long grass were placed at the corners of the cave. That was where they slept. the entrance to the cave had a huge sensor on it. When intruders would try to come in, the sensor would sense them, and lock the door and the windows.

Astral yawned, revealing white teeth. "What, Virgo?" She stretched in her makeshift bed and scrambled up to her talons.

"Remember. Today's the test." Virgo murmured huskily, a worried expression plastered on her face. "Try hard, Astral."

Astral bit her tongue. She nodded. The test was a check-up, to see which group your personality tells you to be in.

She then pulled a talon over her horns, trying to soothe herself down. She then flew after Virgo, stuffing a mango in her mouth, licking the sweet juices and the fruit flesh.

"...two-year-old dragonets... test... today..." Astral heard the sounds of gossiping and laughing. For some reason, she felt angry. For Draceon's sake! I would've ripped them to shreds if they had continued laughing. They only stopped when I glared at them. Stupid dragons.

She made her way to the Chinese-Dragon City Centre, where dragons lining up in the order of the rainbow. They wore had dark cloaks around their shoulders, marked with a golden swirl of the royal emblem.

"Astral!" Astral perked her ears and heard a voice calling her. Her friend, Xing, flew over. Xing was a pink dragon, with purple swirls and claws, a pair of soft, gentle blue eyes. "I'm so nervous!"

"I am too," Astral whispered, her heart beating against her bones. She was worried; what if her mother didn't approve of her group?

As if reading her mind, Xing murmured, "If my mother doesn't approve of the group I choose, I'm roasted." She flicked her purple flaps on her head away from her eyes, her medium-sized whiskers flowing along with the wind.

"I'm going to change. Starscales is a little... too boring. I want to learn how to fight and protect myself." Astral sighed.

"What?" Xing looked at Astral with wide, blue eyes. "You're going to get hurt! My friend, Lon, moved from Rockscales to Starscales. He told me, 'Rockscales has harsh training. You will get hurt.'"

"But I wish to be with them. I will be the best." Astral looked up to the sky, and thought, please, O strong Glare, please guide me on the right path for my life.

Xing sighed darkly. "Astral, you can't decide yet. You still haven't even do the tests yet!"

"Oh, Xing, for Draceon's will, can't we-"

Loud trumpeting interrupted Astral's words.

The two dragons and the other surrounding dragons snapped their heads towards the main stage, which was positioned right smack middle of the city centre, on the cream-colored tiles. On the stage, there was a dark-blue dragon with a pale-green underbelly, with curly whiskers and a sharp, intent stare. It was the head of the City Centre: Izar.

Izar cleared his voice, which sounded like broken glass. Then, he continued: "Welcome, all two-year-old Starscales, to the City Centre!"

The guards at the side applauded, but the dragonets stayed silent, staring intently at Izar, or just picking at their claws.

"Our planet, Nova, has been revolving around Scorale for generations after generations. Generations before, the Dragon Tribe was united. But the leaders decided it was difficult. They split the Dragon Tribe up into 4 groups: The Fernscales, Tidescales, Rockscales, and the Starscales. Today, you will be on a test to show the rankings of what group you should belong in. But on the final day, you will have to choose a group. You have 2 options: stay in Starscales, and learn all about the universe; or transfer to a different group."

As Izar spoke, every corner of the city centre was quiet. Parent dragons stood at the side, worry clouding their gazes.

"But you have to choose wisely. A choice that can change your whole life." Izar's voice dropped down to a low warning growl, which sounded through the city centre through the speakers.

"Choose the other groups, you will now forever be living with them and adapt to their life. However, visits are allowed, but only for once a week." Izar continued to explain. He smoothed down his flap on his head, letting the information settle into the dragonets' minds.

"Is this clear?" His last words echoed through every dragonet's ears. Izar was scanning the crowd with stern, unblinking eyes.

Slowly, hundreds of heads bobbed up and down.

"When I say your name, please follow my assistant, Hoshi, right here." Izar nodded at a light purple dragon with delicate blue swirls. "The tests are short. You don't have to worry."

Then he picked up a scroll. He read out loud, "Hespera, Mariam, Kuma, Nashira, Seren, and Zeta, please follow Hoshi."

6 dragonets straightened up, shaking, and followed Hoshi through a tunnel. The other dragonets waited nervously. Some dragon was breathing on Astral's flap, and Astral jerked forward. Ew.

Izar squinted. "Hoku, Stella, Tauraro, Zosma, Astro, Canis."

The dragonets flew up and followed Hoshi, who reappeared through the tunnel.

"Castor, Astrophel, Hoku, Finlay, Itri, and Lynx."

18 dragonets were gone. Astral felt impatient and nervous. When would Izar call on her?

A few moments later, Hespera, Mariam, Kuma, Nashira, Seren, and Zeta reappeared, looking pale and nervous. They were done with the test. Phew, that was fast. She let out a breath.

"Lintang, Indus, Hydrus, Mehr, Namid, and Nashi."

So the names went on. More dragonets came out, nervous. Astral and Xing were there, waiting nervously.

"Pavo, Astral, Perseus, Pyxis, Orion, and Xing."

Finally! Astral leaped up, Xing on her tail. They followed Hoshi through the tunnels, passing through some rooms, where other dragonets were seated, scribbling furiously on their tests.

"Please sit." Hoshi motioned them into a room. There were scrolls laid out on the crystal tables, with a bottle of blue ink next to the scroll. "You may start. Please take your time." Then Hoshi left.

Astral dipped her claw into the blue ink, admiring the sparkles in the ink, then looked down at the scroll.

It was a new scroll, with dried ink for the text. Astral wrote 'Astral' on the scroll with a quivering claw. Then she read the questions.
