I walked through the door into class. First day of school at WaterCrest High. The teachers seemed nice enough, but school was never amazing.
I looked around the classroom and saw several excited kids. I pulled my black hood over my head and slumped at the emptiest desk. There was a paper there, that said All about you! Tell us about you and then we'll share with the class!
I appreciated the effort, but I really didn't want to do this, especially in front of people I hadn't met. Then again, that was the point.
A tall, pale, smiling redhead entered the room a second later, and sat next to me. He didn't say anything but seemed happy.
"I'm Miss Davis. I'm so excited to teach you in your first year of high school..." the teacher said cheerfully. I tuned her out and looked at the paper. I had the basic questions, favorite color and what you want to be when you grow up. I hesitantly filled it out.
Favorite color: Black or blue
Future job: I don't know
Hobby: Hiking
I winced at the next question: Brothers or sisters:
They were obviously getting at wanting to talk about family life, which was going to be hard. How could it not be? My mom was in jail, my dad was in the hospital, and I lived by myself with with my sister! My aunt checked on my often, but still. I wrote down my younger sister's name, Eden, and looked up.
"So, let's get to know each other!"
I immediately looked down. Luckily, she chose someone else.
"Hey, my name is Jay!" a girl said. "My favorite color is green, and I think I'll be an author, possibly? Maybe an artist? And I love to read! I have a brother named Joseph, too. He's nice." She finished and returned to her desk. "Nice to meet you, Jay! Would anyone like to volunteer?" Several kids raised their hands. "Nova! I need to know you better," A girl with wavy black hair went to the front of the room.
"Hi, everyone! My name is Nova Samson. My favorite color is turquoise, and I want to be something exciting when I grow up-  not sure what though. I love to read, write, and draw. I also have a younger sister named Genie!" A kid raised his hand and waved it around.
"Yes?"
"I have a question for Nova. What's that mark on your arm?"
Nova turned pink and pulled her sleeve lower, covering the mark. "It's nothing,"
She went back to her seat, and Miss Davis called on another girl. She's bound to call on me in a second.
"I'm Kira, and I like the color yellow. I'll be something athletic when I grow up, but I'm not into sports," she pushed her wavy, red hair back. "I like running, watching YouTube, texting. I'm an only child, by the way." she went back to her seat. "What about you, Everest?" Miss Davis asked me. "Ev," I said plainly. "Blue. I don't know what I want to be. I like hiking, and I have a sister." I returned to my seat, showing no expression. A group looked at me with disdain.
"Very nice! I have a sister too. How about Harry?" The redhead next to me got up and smiled. "Hello, my name is Harry. I also like yellow! I might be a proffessor, like my mom. I really like to draw, too, and I have no siblings!" He said cheerfully and came back to me. He folded his hands on his desk pleasantly. Kinda gets on my nerves. Miss Davis gave us some information about herself, and she told us the units we would have. She was both my Social Studies and Advisory teacher, according to my schedule. I tuned her out once again. Hopefully class is over soon. Then I can go home and walk around the woods. It's really calming. I noticed Harry doodling on his paper. It's surprisingly good. He looked up and smiled. "You like it?" he asked.
"Yeah. Great." I said. He kept doodling, then the bell rang.
