The world stops for both of them. The memory of their kiss floods both of their minds, but for some reason it pales in comparison to this kiss. Katherine knows that her love supersedes her anger as they kiss. She did it entirely out of impulse. She hopes the kiss proves that she really loves him and would never want to sell him and the boys out. Jack, on the other hand, is full of surprise. His lips melt away into hers and he feels the pressure of their earlier fight lift off of his shoulders. He loves her and could never stay mad at her for too long. He is extremely surprised that after a heated fight, she still loves him. When they break apart, they both start to talk, but no actual words come out. They are both too shocked to say anything intelligible. Katherine is shocked at what she has just done. She did what she has been wanting to do for a couple of days now. She is so happy. An odd silence hangs between the two and Katherine still has one thing she needs to know before she decides to voice how she feels.

"I just want to know that you didn't do it just for the money," Katherine states in an odd fashion that slightly resembles a question. She hopes Jack didn't turn on David, Crutchy, the boys, and her just to get some cash and a train to Santa Fe.

"No, I," Jack pauses, collecting his thoughts and words out of the shock from the kiss, "I spoke da truth. Ya win a fight when you'se got da odda fella down on da ground eatin pavement. Ya fadda ain't evah givin up on dis. I dunno what else we can do."(Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Katherine smirks and doesn't want Jack to ruin her big moment. She smiles at him and says gleefully,

"Ah, but I do." Jack looks appalled at her and Katherine keeps smiling. This is why she loves Jack. No matter what she does, she can always surprise him. Just like Jack always surprises her. (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies)

"Oh come on," Jack says in disbelief and Katherine looks at him with disbelief. (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies)

"Really, Jack? Only you can have a good idea?" Katherine asks with sarcasm dripping in her voice. Smirking she tries a different approach and says "Or is it because I'm a girl?" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies)

"Ey! I nevah said anyting about dat," Jack starts. (Dialogue in Newsies by Harvey Fierstein) Irritation clear in his voice when Katherine cuts him off with,

"Now would be a good time to shut up!" Jack's face reddens slightly. Out of embarrassment and slight anger? She's not sure, but it certainly is amusing to watch. Jack's head slumps in defeat and she smiles while looking at him thinking about how much she loves him. He looks up again. "Being boss doesn't mean you have all the answers, just the smarts to know what the right one is," She continues and waits to make sure he is paying attention. (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies)

"I'm listening," he says when he's done feeling sorry for himself. Katherine smiles looking into those bright green eyes staring back at her. (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies)

"Good for you! The strike was your idea, the rally was Davey's, and mine will take us to the finish line,"(Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Jack gives her a slightly defeated look as she says this and unfolds her paper right in his face, "Deal with it."(Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) , She smiles smugly as Jack reads the title boasting at the top of the page,

"Da Children's Crusade, huh?" Katherine nods. (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) She has his attention now. Maybe not as a love interest, but she is going to help them win this strike. She begins to quote the article just so Jack can hear some of it,

"To every child working in a factory, sweatshop, and slaughter house in New York, I beg you join us. With those words, the strike stops being just about the Newsies. We call our whole generation to stand and demand a place at the table. My words." (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) She stops and thinks for a moment and gasps excitedly when the solution hits her. "With one of your drawings! We could every child worker in New York to come rally with us. A city wide strike is something even my father won't ignore," (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) She declares bouncing on the balls of her feet excitedly. Jack looks at her with a smile on his face. There is still hope for the strike and now he can see it. Then his face falls.

"One problem. We got no way to print it," He says sadly. (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) But thankfully, Katherine's ever present persistence doesn't go away. She is not giving up on the strike and she is most certainly not giving up on Jack. He has loved her at some point and now she is ready to return the favor. Sadly, she realizes that she may be too late, but maybe there is still hope for her and Jack. She is going to try, because she is the rest of the boys' King of New York and she is going to try anything for them. She looks at Jack and says determinedly,

"There must be some printing press in New York that my father doesn't own."(Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Her eyes almost look sad at the thought that this may not work as she thought. She is trying to be optimistic about this. She needs it as much as Jack does. Jack is thinking and suddenly, he starts doing a groaning laugh and says,

"I know of a press no one would ever tink we'd use," Jack says through his groans of laughter. (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Katherine gets excited again and asks,

"Then why are we still standing here?" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) She runs toward the ladder and Jack starts yelling after her,

"Ey! Wait! Wait! What's dis about foh you? And I ain't tawking bout dis," (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) He says gesturing to the paper in his hand and then he gestures in between him and Katherine, "What's dis about? Am I just seeing tings or is dere someting dere?" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Katherine beams back at him and replies with,

"Of course there is!" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) She smiles and starts descending down the ladder. She has a feeling that he is still interested in her even after the evening's events. Jack on the other hand, is slightly shocked by what she has just said. She actually cares about a Newsie like him. He likes her a lot despite what has happened this evening and he wants to take what he said back. He would never really punch her out of anger. Their kiss from earlier had calmed things down considerably and the energy that Katherine had put into that kiss had told him a lot about her. She cared about him and what happened to the street. Jack thinks of the ways that she has stretched him and tried to make him be a stronger leader. There are so many and now he just wants her to stay. But most of all, he just wants to know the truth about how she really feels and he has the strange feeling that he is about to find out. Still shocked by how nonchalantly she answered him, Jack replies with,

"Well don't say it like it happens every day." (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) His shoulders goes stiff and he begins to question his logic in even talking to her. He is terrified of the answer and Jack Kelly never gets scared. So, he prepares himself for the worst.

"Jack, I," (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Katherine starts only to be cut off by Jack who says,

"No, no, no, I'se ain't stupid. I know that goils like you don't wind up wid guys like me. I don't want you promising someting you'se just gonna take back latah." (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) He pauses looking at her and taking her all in. He just wants to stop everything from happening. Why couldn't the rest of the world stop and they just keep moving forward? Katherine doesn't understand any better than Jack does. Why does he think that Katherine, a working girl, is going to adhere to the regular social rules of New York for any reason? She understands where Jack is coming from and is sad that he is worried that she is going to break his heart. Jack keeps talking, "Standin here tonight, lookin atch you, I'm scared tomorrow's gonna come and change everything for us. I just wanna make time stop, so I can just keep on lookin atch you." (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) He tries to make a frame with his hands so he can take a picture of this moment. Katherine looks herself up and down as he does and beams a radiant smile back at him. She has no idea what to say. She is elated that Jack likes her as much as she likes him. Jack is willing to finish this strike right alongside of her and she knows that no matter what happens now, they will be the Kings of New York forever.

"You snuck up on me, Jack Kelly," She says smiling at him, "I never saw it coming." She walks back up onto the rooftop. His green eyes are full of slight disbelief and hope. (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) He raises his eyebrows and asks,

"Foh shoah?" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) He has so much hope that she could possibly have so much hope for them. He also has no idea that she holds onto that same hope. He waits as she answers,

"For sure," (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) with a slight imitation of his New York accent. Jack chuckles a little at the imitation. She is really something. She never ceases to surprise him. Jack remembers the first time that he tried to kiss her and thinks to now. He would not have a repeat of that incident and he doesn't think Katherine wants it to happen. Katherine starts singing to him about love and how Jack gave her something to believe in. Singing something just as sweet back to her, Jack reaches for her hand and she inserts it in his. He smiles as they get closer together. Katherine happily holds Jack's hand wishing that her father isn't the man he is and hoping that everything will work out for the two of them. Maybe just maybe she can get Jack to stay in New York. Their singing gets more emotional the closer they get and Katherine feels Jack's lips come back down on hers again and she cannot help but return the kiss. Their arms wrap around each other never wanting to let go. Katherine wishes so badly to be Jack's girl, but she knows that he wants to leave and a girl is really the last thing he needs at this point. Even if he does leave, she will always be there for him. Forget what her family, her high society friends, or what anyone else thinks. Jack is someone she will never stop caring about. As they break apart, Jack starts to talk again,

"If tings were different," (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) he starts, but can't come up with anything. Katherine wants things to change. She wants him, no, she needs him to stay.

"If you weren't going to Santa Fe," (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Katherine says wistfully. What does he see out there? Why is Santa Fe his escape? She wishes it wasn't and that he will stay for good.

"If you weren't an heiress and ya faddah wasn't aftah my head," (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Jack adds and he has no fear in saying this. In fact, he is almost proud of the fact that he has Pulitzer this upset. Katherine says with a laugh,

"You're not afraid of my father, are you?" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Jack shakes his head and his eyes squint as he says,

"No, nevah. I am pretty scared of you." (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Katherine laughs and socks him in the arm playfully,

"Don't be." (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) The two continue their singing of their feelings. Once they finish, Katherine nearly tackles Jack with a hug. Her smile lights up his world and in the back of his mind, he thinks "A guy could get used ta dis life." He hugs her back and Katherine knows that this is all real. They believe in each other and that is something not all people guarantee in life. She wonders if this is how love looks. As soon as they pull apart, they hurry towards the street and Jack grabs her hand.

"Where are we going?" Katherine asks. Where could there be a press that her father doesn't own? Jack smiles at her and says

"Your faddah shouldn't leave old tings lying around. Dat press in da cellah could be his downfall."

AN:/ Oooo, Katherine is going up against her dad. Random little side note while I am thinking about it, expect Chapter 6 on Saturday of next week instead of Friday. I am going to be busy that day, so the newest chapter will most likely be on Saturday. So, Jack and Katherine are going to take down Pulitzer together. How much better can this get? And yes, Jack is making smart comments about Pulitzer because, why not? Most of this is from the actual musical, so there aren't really any added scenes until the very end. There were definitely be some next week. I hope you enjoy this one. I wrote this a few months ago, so if you have suggestions or catch some kind of a technical mistake or something that doesn't make sense, please let me know! I would love to get that corrected ASAP!! Anyways, you already saw my notice about next week, so see you then and hopefully on the one shots! Enjoy the story, and I love feedback, so feel free to tell me what you think. Thanks for reading, or taking a peek at this lovely installment, or whatever you want to do with it. See you next week, friends!
