Dark Side Of The Moon

A sigh escaped me as I looked out the bay window of the spaceship, staring hopelessly at the dark side of the moon that's no longer dark.

Firelight hues dotted the landscape, showing off the hundreds of brightly lit colony cubes.

The Soctumel alien race was permitted to make a habitat there by the world government of old Earth. Since most of the humans have relocated elsewhere, the few who still lived there hold out hope that the resources promised would be a godsend.

I have a feeling some precious metals changed hands somewhere along the way because this race of barbaric minions, with a corrupt and ruthless leader, will take over and enslave whoever is left on the main planet within a year. Thank goodness I don't live there anymore.

"You all may wonder what brought us here," came a booming voice from the doorway.

I had forgotten about the others on board, as my sadness at seeing the path my home planet was on had taken my attention. The four of us stared in silence, each caught up in our own thoughts. At the sound of our boss' voice, we had turned, as one unit, towards our leader.

"We were asked, as a favor, to sabotage this endeavor. Our job is to stop this colony from forming. Are there any questions?" The Major continued before he looked to Harry, knowing he would question this.

"Who asked for the favor?"

Our business sometimes involves giving and receiving favors, but we owe out very few. Normally, a new favor was asked of the entire team before approval. The Major gave a one-word answer.

"Isobel."

That explains that. We would do anything for her. Her brother was one of us for years until he was killed in a freak shuttle explosion.

"Are we doing this in person or from a distance?" My question pulled everyone out of their heads, which was never a good place to be.

"From a distance. Go make a plan," the Major said, leaving us to our job.

"The cubes are basic. If we override them, they'll just send more," I explained offhandedly.

"What do you think about just sending a huge electromagnetic pulse? An EMP bomb would stop everything from being used," Charlie added.

"Again, they can just send more cubes. We would have to keep bombing them. It's not time or cost-effective," Oscar pointed out.

As I looked through the cubes, an idea formed.

"If we want to make this place uninhabitable, we can reprogram some of these cubes to give off ionizing radiation. We can set them up in a domino effect. It will disable all electronics on the Moon for about a century," I surmised, looking at my colleagues.

I knew this would be bad if someone crash landed on its surface, as their air and water systems would never work. But after long hours of going over other plans and rejecting them, we continuously came back to this one.

"Do it," the Major said as he read over our reports the next morning.

Before I set the new programming in motion, I had one of the cubes write some words onto a rock surface. It's my signature, even though most would never understand the relevance.

Within a few minutes, the glow was gone, and the planet was uninhabitable.

"Not bad, Killie," Oscar said. "You would never know that you're just a country girl from Montana."

My moniker simply read: Kilroy was here.
