Princess Sofia remembered getting the Amulet of Avalor, and she discovered an exciting mystery behind it.

The Amulet belonged to Queen Lucia of Avalor. During that time, the Amulet was ruby red. Lucia gave it to her older daughter, Princess Elena, for her 15th birthday, telling her it would always protect her from harm. One year later, Avalor was invaded by an evil, power-hungry sorceress named Shuriki. She used a magic spell to claim the lives of Lucia and King Raul, then set her sights upon the palace. The royal wizard, Alacazar, knew a spell that could protect Elena's younger sister, Isabel, and their maternal grandparents in an enchanted painting. But he needed time to cast it, so Elena went to face Shuriki on her own. Shuriki tried to strike her down, but the Amulet saved Elena's life by pulling her inside it. That made the Amulet turn amethyst purple. The only way for Elena to get out of the Amulet was for a special princess to wear it and set her free. This process took Elena a very long time—41 years.

When Sofia first put on the Amulet, Elena knew the former had to be the one. When Sofia learned of this, she talked her family into traveling to Avalor, so she could free Elena. With the help of Alacazar's grandson, Mateo, and the jaquins, Sofia freed Elena from her amulet. This made the Amulet turn ruby pink. With the help of Mateo, Elena freed Isabel and their grandparents from the enchanted painting. With the help of Sofia's family and the brave people of Avalor, Elena overthrew Shuriki and took back her kingdom. Alacazar even rewarded Sofia by redesigning her dress.

Besides the Amulet, a little bit of Avalor had come a little closer to Sofia. The first time her best friend—and boyfriend—Prince Hugo took his Princely Adventure Club to the Park of Rainbow Tigers, they met two members of the rescue squad: Sara and Daisy. The second time Sofia and Hugo went to that park together, they learned that Daisy was from Avalor and she and her parents moved to Albuquerque after Sofia saved Daisy's home kingdom. Therefore, Daisy and her parents already knew about the Amulet, and she told Sara about it. Sofia now knew that since her amulet came from Avalor, she didn't have to keep the magic a secret from any Avaloran.
