Princess Sofia of Enchancia is a very lucky princess, and ever since she became one, her life had been full of adventure, starting with her magical amulet—which had an incredible story behind it.

Over 40 years ago, the Amulet of Avalor belonged to Queen Lucia, who gave it to her daughter Princess Elena for her 15th birthday, saying it would always protect her from harm. The Amulet was ruby red at that time. One year later, Queen Shuriki—an evil, power-hungry sorceress from the Northern Islands—invaded Avalor. She murdered Lucia and King Raul, then set her sights upon the palace. The royal wizard Alacazar knew a spell that could protect Elena's younger sister Isabel and their grandparents in an enchanted painting. But he needed time to cast it, so Elena chose to face Shuriki on her own. Shuriki tried to strike her down, but the Amulet saved Elena by pulling her inside it—and that's when the Amulet turned amethyst purple. The only way to get out of the Amulet was for Elena to find a special princess who had what it took to set her free. Unfortunately for Elena, the journey took much longer than she hoped—41 years.

When Sofia first moved to Enchancia Castle, Elena sensed she'd be the princess to free her from the Amulet. While Roland was picking out a welcome gift for his new stepdaughter, Elena made the Amulet glow, and the king chose that necklace to give Sofia. Ever since Sofia wore the Amulet, she had been receiving blessings for every good deed she performed—and got cursed twice for a few bad deeds. Sometime afterwards, her stepsister Amber found out about the Amulet and jealously stole it from her, so she could get a Disney Princess to appear for her. But stealing the Amulet counted as a very bad deed, so the Amulet cursed Amber by bringing Princess Ivy—an evil, power-hungry princess from a faraway black and white kingdom—to Enchancia. Sofia was very angry with Amber for doing this. The Amulet summoned Rapunzel to tell Amber that the best way to break this curse was to perform a selfless act of loyalty to Sofia. Ivy had magical dragonflies that erase people's memories, and she tried to strike Sofia with one when Amber jumped in front of her and let the dragonfly erase her memory. That broke the curse, and nobody, except Sofia, knew about Ivy, so the secret was still safe.

It happened again about a year later. This time, Sofia and Amber were sleeping over at Albuquerque Palace with Sofia's best friend Prince Hugo. Amber jealously stole the Amulet again, and this time the Amulet cursed her by summoning a seemingly evil prince named Arthur from a sepia kingdom—and he had the same magic as Princess Ivy. Sofia was angry with Amber for stealing her amulet and betraying her trust, while Hugo was angry with Amber for putting his home in danger. Rapunzel returned and taught Amber the same lesson. Arthur was about to strike Sofia with one of his memory-erasing dragonflies only for Amber to take the hit, thus breaking the curse. Nobody remembered Arthur, except Sofia and Hugo because he never erased their memories. After that, Sofia has trusted Hugo with her secret ever since.

Sometime afterwards, Sofia and Hugo discovered a secret passageway to the Secret Library, an enchanted library full of incomplete stories at Sofia needed to complete, making her the storykeeper. One of the stories she had to complete was The Lost Princess of Avalor, which got her to learn the truth about her amulet and what became of Princess Elena. It wasn't easy, but with the help of Alacazar's grandson Mateo and the Jacquins, Sofia freed Elena from the Amulet at long last—which turned the jewel ruby pink. It was finally Elena's time to take back her kingdom. She rescued her grandparents and sister from the enchanted painting. With the help of the brave people of Avalor, Elena defeated Shuriki and took back her kingdom. Alacazar rewarded Sofia with a brand new dress.

Sometime after that, Amber found another secret passageway to the Secret Library and found out about Sofia's role and storykeeper. Amber became jealous that Sofia not only has a magical amulet but gets to go on exciting adventures, so she demanded to join Sofia on her mission to the Mystic Isles to stop an evil Crystalmaster. The sisters ran into Prisma, who claimed that her sister Azurine is the evil Crystalmaster. The trio got to the Mystic Isles, and Amber was obsessed with trying to find a magical jewel for herself. When they got to Isle of Crystals, Sofia turned herself into a crystal bird to get Prisma's Terra Crystal only to get stuck in a crystal plant. Prisma promised Amber a magical amulet of her own, so Amber went to get the crystal. Azurine saved Sofia, which got the princess to realize Prisma's deception, and she tried to stop Amber—but Amber was so blinded by her own envy and greed that she didn't listen. When Amber finally gave Prisma her Terra Crystal, she revealed herself to be the real Crystalmaster. She was jealous of Azurine's talent, and she wanted everyone to see her as the best Crystalmaster ever. Prisma gave Amber a green amulet of her own. But the amulet wasn't magical, and Amber was really upset. Sofia was angry with Amber for helping Prisma and thinking only of herself. Later, Amber admitted that she was jealous of Sofia's prowess and that she's a complete vision of who she is not. Sofia comforted her sister by telling her that she has put others first before. Together, Sofia, Amber, Skye the unicorn, and Harumph the Rompkin stopped Prisma. Sofia captured the evil Crystalmaster, which was witnessed by the Protectors of the Mystic Isles. Amber had learned her lesson about putting others's needs first. As for Sofia, the Protectors asked Sofia to be a Protector of the Ever Realm, where Sofia lives. Sofia was trained to be a Protector, and now she has her Enchantlet. Now she'll be ready to protect the Ever Realm from any danger—and her next mission was going to start very soon.
