Soon, Hugo and Mateo were at the Maruvian temple.

"Wow, this is amazing," Hugo gaped. "But they really let the place go."

"The Maruvians vanished centuries ago," Mateo told him. "Nobody knows what happened to them or where they went."

The jaquins flew inside the temple, where there was a pool of water.

"Legend has it that you have to swim across the enchanted waters to get to the statue," Mateo told Hugo. "You'll be fine, Prince Hugo."

Hugo carefully climbed down and landed on a ledge below. He didn't know how he was going to swim safely. Suddenly, the amulet glowed, and Hugo turned into a merboy. Hugo jumped into the water and found the statue. He took off the amulet and wrapped it around Hildegard's wand, and he put the wand on the crown of Azaluna. The statue rose above the water, and Hugo slid down. The amulet unwrapped itself from the wand, and the wand and amulet flew down in front of Hugo. But nothing happened—the amulet was still blue, and there were no signs of Sofia getting out of it. Hugo frowned at this, and the jaquins flew down.

"Nothing happened—it didn't work," Hugo frowned.

"That's impossible," Mateo frowned. "You performed the procedure correctly, and it worked when Sofia got Elena out."

"If it worked when Sofia performed the procedure, why didn't it work now?" Hugo asked.

"We'll have to back to the palace, so I can summon my spirit animal Zuzo," Mateo declared.

Hugo put the amulet back on and picked up the wand. Hugo and Mateo got back on the jaquins, and they flew away. Hugo felt terrible that he didn't free Sofia from her amulet.
