Luz placed her bags down in the empty room cleared out for her.

"From a small-town girl to a New Yorker." Luz said, looking out the window.

She saw several tall buildings, some she knew, others she didn't. Her mom would usually take her to Queens to hang out with Gwen and Dell, and since Aunt Lilith lived in Upper Manhattan, she was really only in Lower Manhattan to visit Eda and her Café.

"I know the Empire State Building... and that's about it." Luz said.

"Hey, Kid, how you doing?" Eda asked.

"I'm... doing." Luz said, "It just doesn't seem real."

Eda felt sad, no child should have to deal with losing a parent this young.

'She's too much like her mom.'

Eda remembers when she learned about Camila's birth parents. They were in a car accident when Camila was eight, she spent about two years in an orphanage before getting adopted. Eda walked over and put an arm around Luz.

"Hey, why don't we go around the city? Get you acquainted to it." Eda said, "Enjoy the summer weather a little bit."

"What about everything that needs to happen?" Luz asked, "Getting settled in, getting enrolled in school, all that stuff. There's only two weeks left in August."

"Kid, you need something to get your mind off the accident, and what kind of aunt would I be if I didn't spoil my niece?" Eda asked with a smile, "Now come on, let's go get some ice cream."

"Uh... I'm lactose intolerant." Luz said.

"... Let's go get some pizza."

"Eda, that's still-"

"I'll go buy you some pills for your intolerance." Eda said, "One thing about New York, it is a sin to refuse pizza."

Eda put an arm around Luz and was about to lead her out when Luz heard a tiny meow. Luz turned around and saw an eight month old, black, kitten with a white head.

"¡Qué lindo!" Luz said, picking it up, "Who is this!?"

"Oh, that's King, I found him in an alley a few months ago." Eda said, "He was starving, abandoned, and his ear was bitten off. So, I figured I'd take him with me and take care of him until I found him a home."

King jumped out of Luz's arms and into Eda's arms.

"And after a while... I guess he found one here. I mean, I'm not surprised, I do have a way with animals, but I'll tell you about that later."

Eda took Luz out to enjoy the summer sun in the concrete jungle. Elsewhere, at a tall building with the words "Blight Industries" a few scientists were showing off their work to their boss.

"And these... spiders... do what, exactly?" A woman asked.

"They've been exposed to radiation, our hope is that with a little work, they can help us see if radiation is the key to curing cancer." A scientist said.

The boss looked at a clipboard and wrote something.

"And... how profitable would curing cancer be?" She asked.

"Well, we don't care much about the money, we care about helping others." The scientist said.

"Well... that's too bad." She said, "You're fired. Get the hell out of my building and take your morals with you."

"Mrs. Blight, if you-"

"You will leave now, or else I will make sure you won't even be hired as a bagger at a Walmart!" She said, getting frustrated, "Leave!"

The scientists left and Mrs. Blight wrote that on a clipboard.

"Great, now I have to hire more scientists." She said, "Get these spiders out of here, put them on display for those field trips the school always brings students for."

"Are you sure that's safe, Mrs. Blight? These are radioactive spiders." A scientist said, "If one gets out and gets bitten, there's no telling what might-"

"Do you also wish to join the unemployment line?" Mrs. Blight asked, "Because if you decide to question me again, you will be forced to move out of this COUNTRY to find another job. Now get those spiders out of my sight."

"R-r-right away ma'am."

Mrs. Blight looked at the spiders and tapped the glass of one of the housing cells.

"Disgusting."

She walked away, unaware that her nail put a small chip in the glass, near naked to the human eye... but not the spider's eyes.
