The Ghost's cockpit slid open smoothly with a gentle hiss. Kanan Jarrus grinned as he inhaled the cool air of a misty dawn on Lothal. He sighed slightly as he strode down the Ghost's ramp and sat with his arms hugged around his knees. It was so different than Cynda or Gorse, extreme opposites.

The far side of Gorse, hot, dry, and cloaked in darkness, Gorse was next to inhabitable. The other side was inhabitable, scorched to a kindling by a nearby sun. It had been a home of some sort, if you could call living on the planet sleeping on the floor of a bar and lugging around highly explosive chemicals while being chased by a tyrannical empire 'home'. But it had been. And he'd left, left for all this nonsense and suicide missions, left for another reason, too though. And that one reason was good enough for him.

"Ever been to Lothal?" Hera asked from behind him. "No. You?" Hera smiled in answer, sitting next to him. They were quiet for a moment, a nice quiet, Kanan thought.

Kanan had always been a loner. He liked relying on one person only: himself. After Order 66, he had grown accustom to planet jumping. He would stop, stay, make friends, follow the occasion romantic interests, then leave. It had always been like that. But Hera was different, he had changed him, showed him what he could be, showed him he could still rely on people. Or relie on her, at least.

Before, he had been ready to leave as soon as Caleb revealed himself, or things got too messy. Now? He couldn't even imagine leaving her.

Where had she come from? He wondered. He looked sideways at her, as she stared into the endless stars with a smile on her face. What had made her leave her home, her family, for this? He wouldn't have done it. Well, he would now, for her, but still. Why hadn't she stayed where she was no doubt was loved and protected, instead of getting caught in a war? What drove her on to make a difference? Why did she care? With all these questions swarming in his mind, he had to ask some.

"Where are you from?" For a moment, she didn't move, continuing to gaze at the stars. He wondered if she had even heard. "Everywhere, I guess." Hera turned her head, emerald eyes betraying no emotion. That didn't answer the question, he noticed. Before he could say anything, Hera stood. "We should get going." Kanan didn't press the point. She'd tell him when she wanted to, he knew. Maybe she had a painful past, like he did, all her former mistakes haunting every dream. Well that made two of them.

Kanan also stood, stretching luxuriously with a yawn. "Where to?" "Get more supplies for the fleet. Fulcrum and us, that is." Hera replied over her shoulder, already inside the cockpit and starting up the ladder. "Coming?" She added, already in the Phantom. "Yeah." He responded, gazing out into the seemingly endless grassy plains of Lothal.

Out in the distance, the sun rose past the horizon, filling the sky with light. It was a new day, a new beginning.
