Well, Sinterklaas is kinda like Christmas. (It was there before Christmas, and the literal translation of Sinterklaas is Santa Claus.) It's basically an old bearded saint who rides with his horse and helpers (in Christmas elves, but here Pieten) over people's roofs and drops presents in their chimneys. And if you don't have a chimney just in front of your door.

In the original holiday, children would either get presents or "de roe", which was punishment for if you had been bad. Nowadays, this tradition is no more, so that all children would be happy. Of course, your parents would buy the presents and all.

From the moment Sinterklaas would come into the country children would have to put out their shoes on a specific day in the week, (most people went with Saturday or Sunday) and Sinterklaas would put presents in it. Children would put all kinds of rewards for Sinterklaas, like drawings or some coffee, and a carrot for the horse, Amerigo. When it was 5 December night it would be a night were Sinterklaas, to celebrate his birthday, gives loads of presents to all the children in the country (and their families). It's actually only a presents holiday, but it's really fun.

When kids grow older, and realise Sinterklaas isn't real they make surprises for each other, in the form of a handmade gift with small bought presents inside. Most people do this.

So, the idea for this time was to celebrate it without surprises. Only my mom would make a surprise for the rest of us. But that didn't exactly happen.

Then my sister had actually also made surprises (for my dad, my mom, and me.) And she got me some good quality surprise.

And the fun thing is, I still have two Sinterklaas parties to attend! And after that comes Christmas. X3
