Welcome, Ooorah troopers!

Cultures long gone have always been and will always be a great inspiration for the imagination of artists, including creative writers. 

Did the Neanderthal people of Europe believe in an afterlife? Were they capable of speech? Where the Egyptian pyramids built under the influence of visitors from space? Does the Mayan calendar foretell the end of the world?

Science fiction has a long tradition of tackling historical and prehistoric periods—with great success. Interweaving our past and visions of possible futures makes for intriguing concepts and is one of the reasons for the great success of early science fiction. To give just a single example, think of the brilliant short story "The Secret of Stonehenge" by Harris Harrison. (It's available online, you'll find the link in the comments).
