Chapter 25

I woke up to Adrian rapidly tapping on my window. I’m usually a very light sleeper, but seeing as I was up all night finishing my work, thanks to Adrian’s subliminal message within his words, it would take 17 Earthquakes to quake me up. Get it? It’s a pun.

When I woke up, I managed to stand up without getting dizzy and make my way over to the window. Adrian was standing there with a cheesy smile on his face. He was already dressed for school.

“What?” I hissed, rubbing my eyes. I probably look like a train wreck and a windstorm swept into one, or should I say blown into one? Ba-dum-tss. I’m so punny in the morning.

“Get ready,” He demanded. I realized that the sun hadn’t risen yet and it was still dark. I looked at my clock and then looked back at him, ready to scream bloody murder. “Just get ready, ask questions later. Dress comfortable.”

With his last words, he closed his window and I turned on my light, muttering obscenities. I looked at the clock again and sighed loudly. It was 4:58 A.M., nearly 5 in the morning on the day of my suspension.

After taking an extra-long shower, hoping it’d wake me up; I dressed in a simple pair of black jeans and a long sleeved purple sweater. I dug through my closet and found my purple and black sneakers. I easily placed them onto my feet after my fresh clean socks. I then proceeded to decorate my face with makeup.

A simple eyeliner and lip gloss should suffice. I sprayed a light perfume on myself. I walked over to the window, swinging it open and raising an eyebrow at Adrian who was dancing around his room awkwardly. I pounded on the window and he jumped, placing his hand over his heart before he turned with a smile.

“Hey, are you ready?” He asked me, a smile on his face. How could someone be so happy this early in the morning? It’s inhumane, I tell you.

“Depends on what I’m supposed to be ready for.” I informed him and he placed a finger to his chin before he shrugged.

“I’m not quite sure; just meet me down at the car.” He smirked, closing his window. I nodded my head, closing mine as well. I quickly packed a small purse. I made sure I had my wallet, backup makeup, a small spray bottle of perfume, my cell phone, and a few other necessities before I quickly made an escape.

“Where are you going?” My mother asked me and I quickly stood up straight. The hunch made me look suspicious… and like Quasimodo.

“I’m just making a run to the diner before school. I want to get a good breakfast today, I have a few tests. A coffee won’t do this time. I need a real meal.” I excused and my mother nodded, sipping her mug of hot tea.

“Were you up late last night studying?” She asked me and I nodded my head, running a hand down my sleeved arm before I pointed back towards the door.

“Well, I’ve got to go. I’ll see you later, love you.” I told her and she nodded, letting me escape her gaze. I’m surprised she didn’t ask about my backpack.

“What about your book bag? Aren’t you forgetting it?” She asked me and I shook my head.

“I completed my homework in study hall so I left my bag in Jessie’s car. I only took my books home and the school prefers that we not bring them,” I lied and then pointed to the door. “Now, I have to get going. Jessie’s impatient.” I told her and she nodded, waving me off. I sighed as I exited the house.

“Where are we going?” I asked Adrian as I approached his car. He opened the passenger’s side door for me, like usual, before quickly getting into the driver’s side.

“Where do you want to go?” He asked me and I furrowed my eyebrows.

“Am I dreaming or something? Because last time I checked, you have to be at school in an hour and I’m suspended.” I told him and he nodded with a smirk on his lips.

“Are you hungry?” He asked me and I nodded my head before I continued questioning him.

“You didn’t answer me.” I told him and he smiled at me, driving to the nearest 24 hour McDonalds with a drive thru. I got a breakfast burrito, hash browns, and an orange juice and Adrian mirrored my meal. When I went to hand the money to the cashier, Adrian swatted my hand away.

“This is for making you stay up so late to finish your work.” He told me, paying the cashier. Even though his action was awfully sweet, it seemed as if he was trying to hide something.

“Thank you… what are you trying to hide?” I asked and he smiled at me before driving into an empty parking spot. The car was positioned so we could see the sun rising as we ate.

The orange and red glow of the sky was beautiful but it was interrupted by Adrian who was answering my question with another question.

“What are your plans for today?” He asked me and I sighed, placing my head back against the head rest.

“I don’t exactly have any; I’m just planning on winging it.” I told him and he smiled.

“What do you want to do?” He asked me, raising an eyebrow and I smirked before shrugging. He rolled his eyes.

“Anything? Amusement parks, movie theaters, picnics?” He asked me and I pursed my lips, thinking.

“Isn’t it a bit weird to show up at an amusement park alone?” I asked him and he shook his head.

“You won’t be alone.” He told me, finishing off his burrito. I furrowed my eyebrows.

“Imaginary friends don’t really count, besides I wouldn’t pay admission for them.” I began explaining but he stopped me with a laugh.

“I’m skipping school, I’ll be with you.” He told me with a smile. As sweet as the gesture sounds, I can’t just let him skip school and miss out on a day of education.

“No, you can’t do that.” I told him and he shrugged.

“I want to.” He smiled and I felt my insides warm up. If I were standing, I wouldn’t be. I’d be in a giant, marshmallow like heap on the ground sighing like the hopeless romantic I secretly am.

“Why?” I asked and he thought for a moment before he replied.

“Because I want to; I can’t let you spend your day alone, moping around the mall.” He smiled at me and I nodded, but I couldn’t help but feel hurt.

Why are you so sad? You’re the one that said it’s impossible for guys like him to like girls like you?

I didn’t say that.

You thought it. I’m your mind. I know these things.

Yeah, can’t a girl dream?

Sure, if you want to be disappointed when you wake up.

I sat in the car, watching as Adrian drove to the amusement park. I felt my purse vibrate against my leg. I fished my phone out of my bag to see Jessie’s name flash twice.

“Hello?” I asked and Jessie said something so someone near her before returning to the call.

“I don’t mean to interrupt your suspension day, Ms. Rebel, but Trent wants to know if you can look out of your window and see if Adrian is there. He hasn’t shown up for school.” She blabbered and I realized that school must have started 10 minutes ago.

“I see him.” I told Jessie as I stared at Adrian. He smirked and me, waggling his eyebrows playfully before smirking deviously.

“Fiona, come back to bed.” Adrian pretended to shout and I heard Jessie gasp before her breathing started becoming labored.

“Oh my God, Fiona; don’t tell me this.” She started to say but I cut her off.

“No, Jessie! Adrian’s being an idiot who decided to skip school so he could spend his day with me. We’re on our way to an amusement park.” I told her and she let out a long sigh of relief.

“Aww, that’s so sweet!” She cooed, informing Trent of Adrian’s actions. I scoffed and Adrian must’ve heard what Jessie was saying because he winked at me.

“Sweet is the last thing that Adrian is, Jessie.” I told her and Adrian nudged me in my side, causing me to let out a squeal.

“Well, I have to let you get back to whatever you’re doing. Ms. K just walked in and I’m not trying to get in trouble. Bye.” Jessie quickly hung up and I placed my phone back into my purse.

“AND I-I-I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU!” Adrian sang off key. I felt my ear drums writhe in pain as he continued belting out the lyrics. I quickly changed the station, earning a glare from him.

“Maybe something a little less… high.” I told him, switching the station to another song.

“Don’t change it!” Adrian nearly screamed when I reached out to change Hit Me Baby One More Time by Britney Spears.

“MY LONELINESS IS KILLING ME!” He continued singing and I lay my head on the cold glass of the window, letting out a sigh. This was going to be a long car ride.

“Wake up, sleeping beauty.” Adrian stated, pushing my shoulder and I drowsily sat up. I looked at Adrian who was smirking.

The familiar sign of the Amusement park was before us and I went to rub my eye but Adrian grabbed my hand.

“Your eye makeup will totes get ruined, Fi-Fi.” He chided in a falsetto voice. I blinked twice before laughing. I grabbed the rest of my orange juice and gulped it down, wiping the corner of my eyes. Adrian watched me, amused.

“They moved admission?” I asked him, looking around at the parking lot. He shook his head.

“I already paid.” He told me and I furrowed my eyebrows, reaching for my wallet. It’s $35.00 a person.

“It’s okay; consider this a date. I know that I am.” Adrian winked, getting out of the car and opening my door. I felt my insides turn to Jell-O.

I successfully stood up, adding in a stretch and a yawn. Adrian watched me, amused as he stood beside me. I pulled the sleeves of my sweater over my hands as I complained.

“It’s cold.” I muttered and he smirked. This is where the boy gives the girl his jacket in the movies and books, right?

“I know, right. Good thing I brought a sweater,” He smirked and I gave him a flat look. Now he doesn’t want to be a gentleman. “One second.” He told me, opening the backdoor to his car and digging around for a minute.

He came out of the backseat with a sweater on. He took off the one he was wearing and handed it to me, putting on the one he fetched from the backseat. I didn’t see the point in that.

“Why didn’t you just give me the one you got from the backseat instead of taking off the one you were wearing?” I awkwardly worded and he smiled.

“That one is warmer,” He told me, pointing to the one that I was placing my arms through. The sweater smelled amazing and I had to hold back from inhaling the poor thing. “Plus, it’s bigger. And you look cute in bigger clothes.” He said, falling in step beside me. I felt my face burn up as I shyly watched my feet.

“When you smile at the ground, it ain’t hard to tell; you don’t know, oh oh, you don’t know you’re beautiful…” He said quietly and I looked up at him before busting out into fits of laughter. He watched me, amused before he started laughing, too.

“You’re so cheesy.” I told him and he shrugged, smiling slightly.

“It made you smile, though.” He told me. I felt my mouth getting dry.

“Can we get something to drink?” I asked and he nodded his head.

“I’ll be right back.” He told me. I was amused that he didn’t ask what type of soda. He’ll probably get Sprite or something. Or maybe Pepsi, I know that he likes Pepsi. When I turned to watch him walk to the drink stand, I took in a deep breath of the sweater.

“Am I interrupting something?” Adrian asked when he returned with a large cup of soda. I coughed awkwardly.

“I just sneezed into the sweater.” I told him, lying through my teeth. I had a feeling that he knew that as he smirked. He caught me smelling the life out of his sweater. He grinned as he handed me the drink.

“Where’s yours?” I asked him, taking a large gulp of the drink. The taste of sweet, sweet Coca Cola filled my mouth. He made a lucky guess. He pointed to the drink in my hand. I awkwardly pulled the straw out of my mouth.

“Sorry, I uh, just am a bit thirsty.” I told him awkwardly, trying to hand the drink back but he smirked.

“We’re sharing,” He informed me and I felt my eyes widen slightly. Isn’t that technically like kissing, just without the whole mouths touching? “That’s what people do on dates. Do you have a problem with sharing a drink with me, Fi-Fi?” He asked me and I felt my voice catch in my throat.

“Uh, no,” He was still referring to this as a date. Was he serious? “I’m just not really sure of what people do on dates, seeing as I’ve never been on one.” I awkwardly said and he smiled.

“Well, allow me to accompany you on our first date.” He told me, smiling widely. I felt my heart skip a beat as I nodded my head, stupidly. Today is going to be fun, isn’t it?
