At Star Wars Celebration Orlando, Ray Parks (actor who played Darth Maul) mentioned that originally his lightsaber was only the standard length. However, due to his staff work with it, he needed it the width of his body. George Lucas suggested just adding a duplicate hilt flipped over.

I remember the very first time I saw The Phantom Menace when this lightsaber lit up. We had no idea what type of creature this guy was. The Clone Wars had yet to be produced, and we knew nothing of Mother Talzin, Dathomir, or the Zabraks. We just thought he looked demonic. 

When the dual blade ignited, I remember thinking that the rules just changed. We were no longer dealing with single-blade fighting. I didn't think either Jedi would survive the onslaught (even though I knew Obi-Wan had to live).
