Hey all! This book is back from the book dead!! Here we are doing the next chapter of my comparison between Newsies (1992) and Newsies Broadway/Live! Disclaimer: I haven't watched the Live in awhile because I don't have access to it (my family doesn't have Disney + yet.) but, I have some clips from it (songs and stuff) because about two years ago somebody posted the songs on YouTube and I saved some of them onto my computer. So, the song comparisons will be great. I'll need to read the script (that is available and it's perfectly legal) online for that one for stuff that I don't quite remember how it goes and honestly, that might make my comparison a little more detailed and a bit stronger just because I can look at the scenes and stuff. Newsies is easily my favorite musical and the fandom that I can never seem to get enough of (I've toned down some but I still love it a lot. I've gotten into other things too since then but I'll never stop loving Newsies.) and so, I'm just going to come out and say both the original movie and the Live version are fantastic. Both are totally worth your time and totally worth a watch. So, please if you haven't...go watch them. I don't which one you should watch first just go watch one and then watch the other. One more thing before we actually get into the comparison part of this installment, these are MY OPINIONS!!! Do NOT feel obligated to agree with me if that is NOT how you feel. :) Please explain your thoughts too. I would love to hear them. :) I'm also not a personal vendetta against anyone on here or either one of these movies. I love them both, they're not perfect, but I still love them both very much. These are just my thoughts on this particular segment of these two different productions. So, please do not take my opinions and comparisons as fact. I'm not an actress (I would be terrible at it. My dramatics are very sporadic and are very situational. I can't channel it, they just happen) and I'm not planning on going into the movie business so, I'm not an expert in that area and thankfully, I don't really have much of a beef with the acting anyways because it was pretty stellar in both movies.

Also, I don't own the meme. Somebody else made it. Kudos to them.

Okay, now that business is done, let's get to this comparison!! Feel free to drop your thoughts below as you read. I enjoy seeing whether or not you agree with me.

So, to start, I'm essentially gonna be talking about Carrying the Banner and the little tustles that go on within them. Carrying the Banner is a really long song in both versions so that's why it's pretty much getting it's own chapter. It's literally gonna be the first line of both versions of the song to. And I'm not gonna do the whole thing like I did in the last chapter where I put exactly where it goes because they literally start with the same thing.

So first off, the 1992 movie.

You hear Kloppman shouting about carrying the banner in the background and Race is just starting to wake up. He stands up and is just snapping them against his shirt. It's cute because he looks like he's really not a morning person....

Like at all.

He's snapping his suspenders into place and he can't find his cigar and boy does he seem cranky about it. He's moving all of his things on the little table next to him and he just can't find it.

Until he sees another boy, Snipeshooter, sitting there with it in his mouth. And he sings, as one cranky morning person probably would (I can relate),

"That's my cigar!"

Snipeshooter responds still singing, "You'll steal another."

Which honestly, he's probably not wrong. Wouldn't surprise me if that's how Race got his cigars. Race is still cranky and goes for his cigar. He steals it out of his mouth and slugs Snipeshooter in the face. Blink jumps down from his bunk on top and separates the two boys.

"Hey bummers we got woirk to do," he sings as he holds Race back. Race just looks ticked that someone stole his cigar and that it wasn't there right when he woke up.

Priorities, am I right?

Blink moves out into the open part of the bunkroom where Specs, Itey or Dutchy (it's one of those three and I'm pretty sure it's Specs but I don't know for sure....) sings,

"Since when you did become me mother?" Blink winces at his morning breath and shoves him away. Crutchy comes up from behind, ever the sassy one and sings,

"Ahhh..stop ya bawling."

And I'm gonna skip this next piece that isn't singing because I covered it in the last chapter (sorry for the overlap) but I love the little musical interlude here. It's so upbeat and has a very New York feel to it. I love the brass and then there's the violin and it makes for a nice little exchange. The style that the violin is played is very interesting. It really communicates that the boys are trying to be upbeat even though their lives are hard. I notice this because of the notes that they jump to. I don't know for certain but I'm willing to bet that those jumps are meant to bring about some more minor chords.

The key of the song is actually in D which is a very happy and playful key so those jumps in that violin piece really set up that the boys try to be upbeat no matter how difficult their lives get.

And the lyrics bring this whole thing full circle as I'll explain later.

Wow...I'm really sorry, that was a whole long tangent about a violin interlude.........forgive me for my musical nerdiness.

If you don't know, I did orchestra for three years and numerous band things so music is something that I really enjoy. Soundtracks for movies are winners for me (this one is particular) because I like music and a good story so they enhance the story for me.

Anyhoo, moving on. We have Mush starting the proper part of this song (YAY!!! MUSH!!!!........

...............AND HE'S SHIRTLESS STILL)

Oookkkkaaaaayyyyy, *coughs* moving forward.....

He sings "From Bottle Alley to the harbor" which...popular headcanon about Mr. Is Ripped and Has a Six Pack....I mean Mush, is that he sells at the harbor. Which is because of the line in this song. I dunno if anyone else thinks that. You're welcome to suggest otherwise on that but that's my best guess.

"Try Central Park, it's guaranteed," Race sings along. The boys are getting ready to shave their faces for the morning and it's just a very lighthearted atmosphere. Jack flings some shaving cream off his face and onto Mush's hat and it makes a very satisfying noise.

"Try any baker, bum or barber," he sings as he goes to shave his face. Skittery's washing his face and comes up from doing it.

His hair is all spikey and it's kinda cute.

"They almost all knows how ta read," he sings as he dries his face off. Blink comes out of one of the stalls, looking really cheery (I'm not sure how he would be at this early in the morning...) singing,

"I smell money!" Crutchy poke his head into the stall and visibly blanches, putting a hand on his chest and leaning against the wall next to the stall.

"You smell foul," he says. He's so sassy I can't. Blink starts to go for him but Mush intervenes and Crutchie gets away.

"Met this goil last night," Mush sings (and yes, he's still shirtless in case you were wondering and I really have trouble focusing on anything else in the scene because of it) and his eyebrows raise in this little way that's maybe a tad bit suggestive...and it's so cute I can't. He shoves Blink and spins him around with one hand. Blink clutches his head, kinda annoyed by his best friend.

But Mush....Mush is so cute. He's intervening to protect Crutchie but also catching his best friend up on his love life.....and just ahhhhhhhhh.....

And he's so strong.

Okay, moving forward before we get stuck there permanently.

Crutchie is now over the by sink trying to wash his face and Boots is pumping water for something (maybe that's how they all get so strong).

"Ahhhh...move ya elbow," Crutchie sings. He just looks so worried that he can't get to his water. Race has his face covered, including his eyes, in shaving cream and he's just flailing around looking for the towel.

Okay for once, I feel bad for the poor guy.

"Pass the towel," he sings. Skittery jumps up on top of something and waves it in the air while shoving Race away from him and he sings,

"For a buck I miiiiiiggggghhhhhtttt."

And man does he have a pretty voice. Then he jumps down from whatever it is he's standing on (I think it's a chair but we never get a clear shot)

A bunch of the boys come out of the stalls and the chorus starts.

Ahhhhhhh, the chorus. They sound so pretty.

We then see Crutchy singing and pumping water for some poor kid's bath (yeesh, that must be cold) The kid taking a bath looks cold. We see one of the boys putting his hat on as they keep singing and for some reason I think that's really cute.

We see Jack throwing his bandana around his neck as the rest of the boys are jumping around and getting ready in the background.

And Mush....(oh yeah, I'm still talking about him....) gets his hat stolen and is just kinda messing around with some of the other boys and it's just so adorable.

Then that one kid, I fully believe that Les learns how to do this someday, slides out from the other room with his pants down and pulls em up as he jumps.

Yeah....he slides.....

Before running after the other boys as they keep singing and leaving the Lodging House.

The boys run down the stairs and Kloppman tries to count them all as they run down the stairs...which I would just be like "Yeah, have a great day. Don't die." because I'm just really not a morning person.

And Crutchie waves at him as they leave and just ahhhhhhhhhh.

Some of the boys are jumping as they leave the Lodging House and cheering. They then start moving through the city.

Then we get a tiny scene of some kid shouting at the people grabbing the newspapers from the shoot that they come down and packaging them up. He's yelling at them to move faster. I think this is interesting to include because it kinda shows you how many people exactly are involved with the newspaper industry.

And then we see the headline....

Oh boy....oh those poor boys.....

We go back to aforementioned boys and they're running around barrels and some of them (Mush is one of them) are climbing up on them. Mush jumps from one to another and he's to the immediate left of an open doorway and some guy points out. The boys keep singing and Mush points at the guy as he's coming out and the guy goes back inside. A bunch of other boys start jumping up on the barrels and then they start jumping off this thing...I don't know what it is...maybe a wagon??

Anyhoo, Jack is the first one to jump off and he just does a basic jump. They each make a little noise as they jump off too and that's cute.

The next boy.....I don't know which one it is....wiggles his arms and legs and kinda screams as he's falling.

Mush....oh yes Mush....is the last one and he does a whole flip while making a noise like he's putting a lot of work into it.

And I fangirled a little bit harder at that scene.

The boys all go bouncing out into the street, singing and doing all kinds of cool tumbling and stunts and such. Jack does this cool jump and twirl thing with another of the tall boys.

There's this cool musical piece that happens with the horns and the strings here and it literally makes the whole song for me. I don't know why but it does. It's roughly two and a half minutes into the song. It's at like 2:23 ish...I think.

I just think that all of the stunts, the dancing and the "fighting" is very cool and very well done in this piece.

I like the "sword fighting" on the stairs.

And Mush literally doing like three back flips through the middle of it.

I love him.

Jack also has some cool stunts of his own though. He does the whole "slide your foot under your pal and he has to jump over it thing" which is cool.

Crutchie has a cool little solo.

"I'm no snoozer. Sittin makes me antsy. I likes livin chancey."

His crutch gets taken from him at some point and he falls but Mush pulls him by his crutch.

Yeah....by his crutch!!!! Mush tosses it back to him and then they do this.....

Yeah, I don't know how to describe it without saying something that I don't want to say online.....

Hip thrust. We'll just call it like it is.

Then we move to the nuns and they sing their whole thing. It's very pretty.

The boys all take their hats off and such and just ahhhhhh....it's so cute. They approach the nuns very kindly and take the bread and coffee or water or whatever it is they have for them.

Then there's a mom who comes looking for her son and it's just so sad. The boys are singing various things to the nuns as they are handed things. The mother has an amazing voice but it's sad that she can't find her son. She looks at several of the different boys in a very motherly fashion.

The boys move and do this cool bounce thing off a brick wall as they move out. They move to where the headlines are being written and they watch as its being written. They sing about it and it's fun to listen to them as they start changing key. They throw their bread and then do another hip thrust.

One boy asks if a crooked politician would help and the boys pelt him with their hats, talking about how that isn't news anymore.

Race and Bumlets are pretending to have some kind of a fight and Jack leaps in doing a cool move to separate them.

The boys are doing cartwheels and all kind of tumbling moves as they run. And then they're all in front of the gate and Mush is somehow without his hat again. Race sings and puts his arms all the way up in the air and it's cute.

The boys are play fighting and just singing as they get ready to sell the papes.

Skittery has his stick out like a hurdle and some of the older boys are lifting the younger boys over it and it's really just super cute. It's fun to see all the boys just hanging out with each other like they do.

Their revelry is cut short by the entrance of Morris and Oscar Delancey.

And the boys get instantly quiet.

And the music instantly gets more sinister.

The boys are kinda laughing and still joking around. Then Race has the BRIGHT IDEA *long sigh* to make a comment.

"Dear me...what is that unpleasant aroma?" And he's so dramatic as he says it, "I fear the sewer may have backed up during the night." Race takes off his hat and fans his face. He pats Blink's face and Blink pats Mush's face. Crutchy's laugh in the background is priceless. Boots adds in,

"Ahhhh... too rotten to be the sewers." Crutchy decides to toss in his two bits.

"Yeah yeah then it must be.....the Delancey brothers," he says and the whole group starts to laugh.

Race's laugh is so dramatic and cracks me up.

"Hiya, boys!" he greets but Oscar just grabs one of the littles and says,

"In the back, ya lousy little shrimp" and throws him to the ground. The little kid cries out and Jack comes over to help him up.

"It's not good to do that," Race remarks, "It's not healthy."

"Ya shouldn't call people lousy little shrimps, Oscar. Unless you're referring to the family resemblance in your brother here," is Jack's line as he defends the younger boy.

Race, being Race (do I really have to explain any of his actions though because I'm not sure I can at this point), says,

"5-1 Cowboy skunks em. Whose betting?"

And the rest of the boys refuse because they KNOW of Race's betting history. Hahah.

Jack continues, "That's right. That's an insult. And so's this."

He swipes Morris' hat and runs with it. The boys start cheering and narrating the fight.

Jack jumps up over a wagon and the Delanceys scramble after him. He grabs onto some awning and kicks them in the face. He climbs around on the awning like you would on monkey bars (I'm terrible at them) and the poor baker dude who owns the place just look likes he wishes he hadn't gotten out of bed that morning.

And I'm over here fangirling over Jack in a fight scene. And just Jack in general.

David and Les walk in from the side and watch the events unfold. Jack runs into David and David, in the most Davey fashion, asks,

"What do you think you're doing?"

"Runnin!" Jack calls out before taking off. We get a shot of the boys tussling with the Delanceys to buy Jack more time. The Delanceys break free and each one runs into Davey and David makes a face like it hurts.

The boys chase after them and start singing. Jack starts thanking them for their praise as they applaud his fighting efforts. Somehow, Jack gets shoved into another mini fight with the Delanceys. Some other boys, Race, Blink, Mush, Boots I feel like is in there, all jump in to help out. They all pretend to throw punches and get excited when Jack knocks the brothers into each other.

The song ends and the little boy we saw earlier yelling about getting the papes out yells,

"These is for the Newsies."

And end song.

Ohhhh boy....that was long and I've only done one movie.

I'm sorry for all the Mush fangirling in this one....

I'm also sorry for all the Jack fangirling that's probably gonna happen in the Livesies one.

Okay...onto Livesies.

And also, there's gonna be just a baby bit of overlap with this one too from the last chapter because there's some singing that I apparently covered in the last chapter but is really the start of this song.

*long sigh*

So, we start with Albert stealing Race's cigar. And Race singing that Albert stole his cigar and Albert singing back that Race will just steal another.

I love how moody Albert is, for some reason...the backwards Newsie cap makes it. He just looks so done with Race's shenanigans.

But just look at Albert's arm muscles.

They're impressive.

Spec comes down and tells Race that it's bathtime at the zoo (he's singing of course)

Henry sings about surprising his mother (he's shirtless and getting to ready to shave his face).

And Albert moodily replies,

"If you can find her."

And all the boys say.....

Yeah, ya already know what they're gonna say.

And also...Mush makes his first appearance in this one and his hair looks so cute.

Okay...Jack better come in soon because I'm gonna start fangirling over Mush AND Albert if he doesn't come in soon.

If I wasn't already....oh wait.......

Albert moodily says complains that papes aren't moving like they used to. He declares that he thinks he needs a new selling spot and asks if anyone has any ideas.

Race starts singing in reply the same lyrics that the other song starts with but he seems more awake than his 1992 counterpart.

Way to go, Race!!!

He says that there's easy pickings guaranteed from Bottle Alley to the harbor. :)

Finch cuts in with some of his own advice saying to try any banker, bum or barber because they all already know how to read. Albert does this cute little smirk and points at him. Race looks super happy with his cigar in his mouth.

And then Jack comes down the stairs, buttoning his shirt.

JACK!!!!!!!

He looks really cute in that blue button down shirt....like really cute.

And that hat. I really like his hat in Livesies. It just is a very Jack hat. He starts singing.

"It's a crooked game we're playing. One we'll never lose. Long as suckers don't mind paying just to read bad news," is what he sings and he sings so beautifully. He playfully punches Race in the shoulder and Race runs away.

Crutchie's just over there, making his way down the stairs next to Jack and Jack is finishing getting ready. He's singing what he was singing above as he does all this. He playfully punches Crutchie in the arm too. Crutchie punches him back.

The shades start coming up on the rest of the catwalks, revealing the rest of the boys.

I'll never get over the catwalks. They're just so cool.

Then the rest of the boys start singing the chorus. Jack whips off his hat as they do and rubs his fingers through his hair before shoving it back down in time to the rhythm. Race is airing out his vest?? He's flapping it around so that's what I assume he's doing??

Jack stretches his neck out by moving it back and forth and Crutchie starts investigating his crutch.  I like the little nudge dance move that Jack does to Romeo as they're singing the chorus.  Jack points them downstairs and they start to move down there. The catwalks move as they do and it's so fun to watch.

I honestly think the catwalks give everything a very New York feel.

Also, that riff I talked about is also in this song too. It's somewhere in this first or second go around of the chorus......

Katherine (I love her outfit, not sure if I would wear it but I do love it) and Darcy enter the scene and Romeo chirps, while hanging on to the side of the catwalk (and is that adorable or what?),

"Well hello hello hello beautiful." Jack comes down and pushes Romeo away while saying,

"Whoa! Step aside, Romeo. Nothin' what concerns you here." He then leans on the catwalk himself (Which he looks ridiculously adorable as he's doing....) and greets Katherine, "Good mornin, miss! May I interest you in the latest news?" Katherine merely gives him a nod (which way to go on the cordial but not interested move Kath).

"The paper isn't out yet," she dismisses him. The other boys are running around the background getting ready and Jack is now just casually leaning against the side of the catwalk. She and Darcy try to move forward but Jack cuts in.

"Oh! I would be delighted to deliver it to you personally," he interrupts, putting a hand up. I love you, Jack but subtlety and persistence are not your strong suits. Darcy tries to protest but Katherine cuts him off,

"Uh no...I've got a headline for you."

Jack just has this adorable little smirk on his face. Katherine and her sass knock this one out of the park for sure.

"Cheeky boy gets nothing for his troubles," she finishes. The boys come forward and are laughing and "Ohhhhh" ing at the fact that Jack just got roasted.

Adorably enough, Jack himself is doing that as Romeo comes up next to him.

"Back to the bench, slugga," he says, "You struck out."

"I'm crushed!" Jack cries out, being all dramatic and holding his chest as he walks away.

Finch comes racing over to Crutchie as he moves towards Jack.

"Crutchie! What's ya leg say? Gonna rain?" Finch asks him. Crutchie shakes his leg and thinks on it for a second.

"Uhhhh....no rain....uhhhhh," he says, making the most adorable faces as he figures it out, "Ho ho! Partly cloudy. Clear by evenin." He gets this adorable little smirk on his face and so does Mush, who's standing right next to Finch.

"They oughta bottle this guy!" Finch calls out excitedly. Race comes over and puts a hand on Crutchie's shoulder.

"Yeah and the limp sells fifty papes a week all by itself," he says. Crutchie, who doesn't like to use his leg as a liability, protests,

"I don't need the limp to sell papes. I got personality." And then he start singing, "It takes a smile that spreads like buttah. The kind that turns a lady's head." Mush comes closer to him, doing this cute little nod with his head while he has a stick on his shoulder and his arms resting on it.

"It takes an orphan with a stutter," Race says, grabbing one of the boys (I think it's Buttons but I could be wrong), patting his cheeks and the boy looks very sad.

"Who's also blind!" Finch cries out, covering the boy's eyes. The boy squints his eyes shut tight.

"And mute!" Albert says, throwing a hand over the boy's mouth and the boy scrunches his mouth up.

"And dead!" Elmer shouts from behind them. The boy gives an adorable little laugh before they keep singing.

Mush is sword fighting with Romeo and it's just adorable. Jack and Crutchie sit down next to each other at the base of one of the catwalks. Specs does a flying leap from bottom of one of the catwalks and the boys are just doing lots and lots of cool tumbling, gymnastics and dancing.

Jack and Crutchie have a little moment and I'm pretty sure Jack either cleans Crutchie's shoe or kisses it. Not sure which.

Mush gives his cap a tug and goes into some handsprings with Romeo.

Some of the other boys are doing some really cool spins and jumps. Finch comes over by Jack and Crutchie is still with Jack. I think he asks them to hold his slingshot so he can go dance or something.

Anyways, Crutchie shoots him with a marble or something with the slingshot and Jack cheers for him. Finch comes charging back at them and Jack flips him over in his arms. Finch steals his slingshot back from Crutchie and Jack playfully kicks him back out into the dancing.

The dancing is amazing. I love seeing them do all of these cool moves and display all the strength that we know is there. Jack and Crutchie are over there chuckling about Crutchie's shot when Finch shouts,

"Hey! What's the hold up? Waitin' makes me antsy. I likes livin chancey."

I love his voice. He has such a pretty voice and I like the piano backing him. Jack playfully punches Crutchie in the shoulder before the boys all move forward and stand in a line as the catwalks move behind them as they keep singing.

The way all of them stop at the nuns singing is just adorable. Two of the boys take Crutchie and put him on their shoulders which is absolutely adorable. The singing is absolutely beautiful.

Jack's still my favorite singer in the whole show though.

"Thanks for the grub, sister!" Elmer calls out in the most adorable way.

"Elmer!" the sister replies, pointing at him, "When are we gonna see ya inside the church?"

"I don't know, Sister, but it's bound to rain sooner or later," Elmer replies. I love whoever laughs at this joke in the background. It really makes it that much better.

The boys singing here is just absolutely adorable.

Jojo's is really really adorable.

Jack finally cuts off the little solos with singing of his own. Crutchie joins him and soon Race and Romeo join them and it's adorable to watch them do little dances and sing together. They're so playful in the manner that they like to rough house with each other and it's just so cute.  Jack and Romeo dancing is great too. The other boys are just hanging on the catwalks and doing similar things with each other and just ahhhhhh....it's so cute.

The little dance that Romeo and Jack do before they run off though....that one takes the cake.

The jumping around and all the adorable little antics are just so fun.

Elmer's the one who asks about the crooked politician and everybody hits him with their caps and what not and poor Elmer looks so sad.

Poor thing.

Jack even comes by to scoot him along in this adorable manner.

I love the ballet moves that follow this. They're absolutely wonderful.

The dancing in general is just so well done.

Specs does this cool jump and his leap! The dude leaps so high!! I'm so impressed.

Jack cheers him on before he goes out and it's just so cute. I love how encouraging he is of the other boys.

Jack walks out with an arm around Crutchie and they're all doing dramatic rough housing and dancing and what not. It's just super duper cute.

Jack's little dances are so fun to watch and him play fighting with Crutchie is adorable to watch. I love how brotherly they are to each other.

I love it when they all jump and cling to the gate. They look absolutely adorable as they look up at the headline in anticipation. Once again, just like the other version, they're trying to find the good and be upbeat about their lives even if they're hard.

"Hey look!" Finch exclaims, "They're putting up the headline."

"I hope it's reaallll bloody with a nice clear picture," Specs hopes. The rest of the boys agree with one resounding yeah with the exception of Jack because apparently he's too cool for that.

I love the animation of the chalk drawing on the chalkboard. I always think those effects are so cool in this one.

I also love the little musical buildup here. It's so cool.

The expressions on the boys' faces are absolutely adorable as they all mumble and groan about the boring headline.

Jack's expression is my favorite. He closes his eyes and his mouth hangs open and it's just funny.

Mush's is just cute and innocent and you can clearly hear him say "Aww man."

Romeo drops his head and that's funny.

"Awww. The trolley strike? Not again," Elmer grumbles.

"It means three weeks of the same story," Race complains.

"They're killin us with that snoozah," Finch adds in.

"Hey make way! Hey step aside," one of the Delanceys says.

"Oh dear me....what is that unpleasant aroma" Race says with the most adorable whine laugh I've ever heard. He fans his face with his cigar. "I fear the sewers may have backed up during the night." Crutchie gets all dramatic as he says,

"Or could it be?"

And then the boys all say together, "The Delancey Brothers."

They open the gates and this is a very interesting conversation that transpires. Finch starts with,

"Hey, Oscar. Word on the street says you and your brother took money to beat up strikin trolley workers." Oscar replies with,

"So? Honest work."

And Albert cuts in....ohhhh Albert.

"For crackin the heads of defenseless workers," he suggests and Race's facial expression right when he says this is gorgeous.

"Take care of the guy who takes care of me," Oscar snaps back. Race asks a really interesting question,

"Hey, ain't your father one of the strikers?" Oscar replies in the most snarky manner and punches Race in the chest,

"Guess he didn't take care of me."

Race looks like he's about to go at it and as this is going on Morris decides to pick on Crutchie.

Oh he really shouldn't do that.

"You want some of that too, ya lousy crip?" he asks. And then he pushes Crutchie down.

Okay...nobody does that to Crutchie and gets away with it.

Which he won't, don't worry. Jack's got us covered. :) The boys start yelling too so if Jack won't, I can guarantee you that someone will.

"That's not nice, Morris," Jack shouts and takes the crutch from him. Race shouts out playfully,

"Hey 5 - 1! Jack skunks em!" And the rest of the boys agree. Oscar shoves him back and Romeo starts patting Race on the chest to help him cool off. I kinda like to think that Romeo is someone the other boys send Race to when they need someone to calm him down. Jack holds up a finger to tell the other boys that he's got it.

And trust me...he's 100% got it.

"One unfortunate day you might find you got a bum leg of your own. How'd you like us pickin on you, huh? Hey! Hey! Maybe we should find out," he says and then he whacks them with the crutch. They fall over in pain.

Okay...Jack standing up for someone and fighting the Delanceys is really attractive. Oscar starts threatening him.

"Wait till I get my hands on you," he snarls.

"You gotta catch me first!" Jack replies in a cheeky tone. He shoves him back over with the crutch and starts running away. The boys all yelling "Go, Jack!" is just the best.

The boys keep dancing which is super fun to watch because it gets more complicated and Jack runs up and around on the catwalks to distract the brothers. He gets them to crash into each other at one point. Jack climbs up on one of the pape carts and tosses Crutchie's crutch back to him and it's just so fun to watch him.

The rest of the boys are dancing their hearts out.

Okay....but the little cap pull as they're doing the last round of the chorus.....

It's really cute. Especially because they focus on Mush.

Jack's also doing this swinging thing off the edge of the catwalk as he comes down to join his boys. And then they finish the song all together.

I do like the key change in this one. It makes this rendition of the song interesting.

Also, you can't go wrong with Jeremy Jordan as Jack Kelly. You just can't.

So....I don't think I really prefer one of this song over the other. I love the lyrics for both versions of the song because they both reflect the life of a Newsie really really well, especially of these Newsies. These Newsies hope for a better future and that's reflected in the lyrics of this song. They know that their lives are hard but they try to have hope and enjoy the time that they get to spend together.

The dancing is great in both versions, the singing is great in both versions, the playful banter with the Delanceys is really great in both versions and it's just overall a great experience no matter which one you watch.

I love that as the boys run around in the 1992 version, we get to see what the city looks like. And I love the feel that the catwalks give to the Live version. They just give the whole movie a really strong New York vibe.

I love this song. It's probably one of my favorite numbers in both versions (probably is my favorite) because we get to see the boys just living their lives. That's something I really enjoy seeing. I love seeing the brotherly bonds between the boys and this is something that is really strong in both versions.

You're gonna find this pretty often.....I really like whatever it is that I'm evaluating about both versions pretty equally. There will be some rare occasions where one wins out over the other but not often.

Anyways, yeah!!! Thanks for putting up with me fangirling about my favorite Newsies in my favorite song (man is there a lot to fangirl about)!!! I really hope you enjoyed the read. Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments. I'd love to chat and fangirl with whoever wants to. Thanks for reading, commenting or doing whatever it is you do!! I appreciate it!!!
