Britney bolted out of a deep sleep. She didn't sleep much anymore. The fact that she'd slipped into her mother's wine collection had allowed her to find sleep that night. As soon as she sobered up, her anxiety piqued again. It sent her heart into a race, and her body felt the need to catch up, so she acted before her brain was fully aware of her movements. She nearly tripped over the empty wine bottle of Barefoot wine beside her bed.

After a moment standing, Britney remembered everything. She remembered Hayden. She picked up the bottle and examined the state of it. Not even a drop. She threw it in the empty trash can beside her desk and it clanked louder than she'd thought. The clock on the desk said it was two in the morning. Her head was pounding. She grabbed a coat off the floor, slipped it on, took her keys from next to the clock and put them in her pocket.

All she needed was some fresh air. A jog would help clear her mind. The night air was crisp as early fall air should have been. She breathed deeply, the way she did in yoga class. Where she'd gone with Hayden.

They had placed their mats next to each other for months in that class. They'd smile at each other when they did silly poses, and they'd whisper back and forth, telling each other about things going on in their lives or the lives of the others around them.

After Hayden died, Britney had tried to go back there, but she left in tears. The empty space where Hayden used to be just seemed so heavy. It pushed over onto Britney until it shoved her out of the building. She hadn't gone back since.

Outside her house, Britney blew out a deep breath and started off. Her feet took her away. There was no solid destination, she just wanted away. Woods lined one side of her, the other side was littered with dark houses. Homeowners were all sound asleep, free of the troubles she carried around on her conscience. Suddenly she wanted to be far away from them. Leaving them in dream world while she was awake only feet away was too close. She ran into the woods. The moon was bright enough for her to see by, and she didn't fear anything in them. She recklessly welcomed trouble to find her. Didn't she deserve it?

Britney found herself wiping away tears. She wasn't aware that she was even crying until she realized her face had gone numb from the cold air on her wet tears. Once she was aware, she began crying harder. Then she was screaming. Ravens flew from the nearby trees into the darkness beyond, fleeing her bothersome human noises.

"I'm sorry, Hay," she said, once her screams died down. "I'm so sorry."

Hayden saw her, in the way she always saw all of them at all times, but she didn't care much. It was hard to find sympathy anywhere inside her smoldering heart. She wasn't given these abilities to forgive.

Britney heard a branch snap. It forced her back into reality. She was in the middle of the woods, in the middle of the night. She wiped the last of the tears away, looking around curiously.

"Who's there?" she demanded.

There was no answer. She ran back the way she'd come, and Hayden went for number 36. It wasn't Britney's number yet.
