SUMMARY: That Jaya AU idea I had, a snippet of a scene I planned out whilst brushing my teeth. That's when I get most of my ideas :)

Nya curled up on the top step, her knees tucked under her arms, as she perched on the cold wood floors, her bare toe drawing invisible patterns on the step below.

"There you are, I've looked all over for you." Jay had his welcoming smile when he first introduced himself, as he crouched in front of her, seating himself comfortably on the step just below, sat so that he was facing her, "What's up?"

"It's that...that empty feeling, Jay," she whispered, "Something's missing, and I don't know what." Jay opened his mouth to talk and then closed it again. He hadn't mentioned a word of what happened before the accident, and was strongly advised against it, by Nya's doctors.

"I...I didn't know who you were until after I woke up..."

"I knew you," he stated quietly, "I usually help out in the kids' ward, but I stumbled into the coma ward, and I saw you. You looked so peaceful, as you slept, as if you were just having a nap. I was intrigued, so I went to the warden, and asked about you. He...he told me who you were, what happened to you, and I assigned myself to additionally help out in the coma ward."

The girl nodded, shuffling closer as Jay continued talking, "Everyday, for five hundred and forty seven days, I bought you flowers." A smile tugged at Nya's lips at the thought of that, "Well...not everyday. When one bouquet died, I bought another. Each time, I selected different variations. There's this beautiful field with almost every type of flower you can think of. The first bouquet contained dandelions and daisies."

Silently, Nya reached into her pocket, bringing out the dead, tangled mess of daisies, the petals hanging off lifelessly. Jay grinned, "I see you still kept the daisy chain."

"Yeah...it's sorta...disintegrated."

"I'll make another," he promises, and Nya nods, setting it down as Jay resumed, "I read to you too. Different stories. I tried out fairy tales, from the kids' ward, and after we went through that, I read you some classics. We'd gone through every book the hospital had, and I resorted to the old people magazines, but they were very boring so I made up stories. I didn't know if you could hear them or not..."

Nya's body may have been in shutdown, but she heard every word from his soothing voice during her sleep. It coaxed her, and although she couldn't react, she loved them.

"On the day you showed signs of movement, I went out to the gardens and collected a batch of water-lilies and cherry blossoms. I threw in some bluebells too, for colour variation, and some tiger lilies too. When I learnt that you were, and still are, a minor and didn't have a home to go to, I signed up as a legal guardian. I'd just turned nineteen so I was eligible. They made several background checks and tried calling your...old friend again. There was no response, so I took you home."

Nya looked up at him, and asked him the question all of Jay's family and friends wondered about too, "How do you talk on and on without losing your breath?"

"I guess I've been called a chatterbox before." he admitted sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck as Nya giggled. Jay thought for a second, before lightly nudging her, "Your birthday's coming up soon. Do you wanna do anything special?"

"How old am I?"

"Almost eighteen, sweetheart." he reminded her.

SO IMMA LEAVE IT THERE. I had a plan that at this scene, they would kiss, but I decided to wait until she turns eighteen. If I made this into an AU, this would occur halfway-ish of the book.
