Aragorn and Legolas raced into the the Golden Hall. Inside it was nothing but devastation and chaos.

Legolas looked back out across the city. The orcs were breaking through the gates. The soldiers hadn't had enough time to rally.
The people were defenseless.
"Go find the others!" Legolas told Aragorn.
"Where are you going?" he asked.

Legolas didn't have time to answer. He raced down the steps and disappeared down the steep hill.

Aragorn turned and entered the room. People were struggling to get out. Everyone was in a panic.

Where was Gandalf? Or Theoden? Aragorn raced deeper into the destruction and mayhem. He had to find them no matter what.

------------------------------------------------------

Legolas ran swiftly down the hill. Moving like a shadow, he threw off his hood and pulled out his bow, thankful that he had decided to keep it close to him at all times.

When he arrived the people were in a panic. They ran towards the top of the hill towards the Meduseld.

Legolas turned towards the gate. The orcs had broken through and were charging through the streets. Frightened people desperately tried to outrun them.

Legolas nocked an arrow into the bowstring. He fired it at the first orc he saw, then another.

He ran straight into them. Firing and dodging arrows as he went. Thankfully there were soldiers nearby who aided the elf in protecting the people.

Now that he was closer, he switched from his bow to his knives. He spun them once in his hands before engaging the first orc who was unfortunate enough to cross his path.

He sliced off an orc's head with one knife while stabbing one in the heart with the other.

He quickly forced both of them into another orc that appeared in front of him.

At the same time he thrust one knife forward into an orc and the the other one backwards into another.

He kneeled down onto one knee to avoid a swinging sword. He sprang up and thrusted his knives into the orc that wielded it.

Screaming caught his attention. He looked and saw a young boy alone outside his house.

He was screaming for his mother. Legolas wasted no time and fought his way toward the child.

He reached him just as an orc was about to kill him. He threw one of his knives into the back of the orc's head.

It fell and Legolas ran over to retrieve his knife. He looked at the boy and held out his hand.

"It's alright, I'm going to help you." The boy stared up at him in fear. He refused to move.

"Where is your mother? Let's go find her, alright?" he smiled and reached his hand out again.

This time, the boy took it. Legolas gripped it tightly as they made their way towards the Meduseld where Legolas assumed the boy's mother went. As they ran an orc suddenly charged at them.

He dodged the orc who flew past him and kept running, keeping the boy close to him.

Another scream sounded in his ears. He turned and saw a man who stood between an orc and a woman who lay injured on the ground. He assumed that it was the man's wife.

The man was desperately trying to fight off the orc but it was no use. The orc knocked him down and went in for the kill.

Legolas switched to his bow and fired an arrow at the orc. It fell dead but another came up to the man.

Legolas ran with the boy behind him. He fired another arrow which killed the orc. "Run!" He called out to them.

The man helped his wife to her feet and they ran. Legolas grabbed the boy's hand and continued running.

He froze. More screaming. Legolas could hear every individual cry of distress, pain, and fear.

It was maddening.

You can't save them all Legolas.

The elf froze. That voice...
He'd heard it before.

You can't save anyone Legolas.
Not these people. Not your friends. Not even yourself.

Legolas spun around franctically. Where was that voice coming from?

You will all burn!

The boy cried out in fear. Legolas snapped out of his trance and froze as a group of orcs began setting fire to the houses.

Some had torches and others were shooting flaming arrows. One orc had one aimed at the boy.

The arrow flew towards them. Legolas grabbed the boy and they toppled backwards to avoid being hit.

The boy landed on top of Legolas. Both quickly scrambled back to their feet. But as they did an orc grabbed Legolas by the arm and swung him aside.

He landed hard on the ground. The orc was about to kill him when the boy shouted at it.

The orc turned towards the boy, whose face turned pale. The orc went after him instead. The child tried to run but slipped and fell to the ground.

Legolas watched in horror. He screamed for his body to move but he was frozen. His eyes met the boy's. They were filled with terror.

Everything seemed to slow down in that moment. The face the boy made was exactly like the ones from his nightmares. The ones all of those people made before he killed them, when he served Sauron.

Legolas looked at the orc. Only it wasn't an orc standing over the boy, it was himself.

Dressed in black, a cruel sword in his hand. His face emotionless as he raised his sword to deal the killing blow.

This is what you are Legolas.

The vision went away, it returned to the orc standing over the child.

A monster.

A killer.

The orc began to bring his sword down. The boy froze.

"NO!" Legolas flew at the orc. He grabbed the arm that the orc held the sword in.

They struggled. The orc trying to throw off the elf and Legolas trying to wrestle the sword away from the orc.

The orc beared down on Legolas. The elf was forced to one knee while his hands gripped the orc's arm that held the sword.

The orc grabbed Legolas's hair and yanked his head back. The elf struggled to break free.

His strenght was failing. The sword was just inches from his neck. He stared straight up at the sky. It was clouded with smoke.

It choked him and made his eyes water. The tip of the sword pressed against his skin. Blood began to trickle down his neck.

He couldn't hold on. He was going to die.

No. He wasn't. He gripped the orc's arm tighter. Not like this. Not on his knees. Not at the hands of this orc.

Summoning all of his strength, he clutched the orc's arm and pulled it out of its socket. The beast roared in pain. The sword barely scraped Legolas's neck.

The orc's other hand lost its grip on Legolas. The elf sprang up and grabbed the orc's head with both hands.

Legolas snapped the orc's neck. He threw the creature down and grabbed its sword.

He threw it forward and it struck another orc in the chest.

Legolas stood over the dead orc breathing heavily. The boy stared with his mouth open and eyes wide.

Legolas turned to him and didn't speak. Instead he walked over and took the boy's hand.

"Let's go." he said. Silently he led him towards the Meduseld.

------------------------------------------------------

As they ran up the hill Legolas heard men shouting. He stopped and turned towards the sound.

Emerging from a place he couldn't see was Gandalf riding Shadowfax. On either side of him was Theoden and Aragorn. Theodred rode with them as well as Eomer. Gimli was with Aragorn.

Some rode horses while others ran. They ran down the orcs that attacked the people.

The majority of the orcs had been killed by Legolas and the few soldiers that had been out there.

It was a quick and easy fight. It was over. They had won.

Legolas stood next to the boy and gripped his hand. They watched in silence as Gandalf and the others finished off the orcs.

Movement caught Legolas' eye. A woman was coming up the hill. Her face was dirty and her clothes were ripped.

The boy let go of Legolas' hand and ran towards her. He called out to her and she lifted her head towards the boy's voice.

She ran towards him with tears streaming down her face. They embraced each other tightly.

The boy smiled at his mom and pointed at Legolas. His mother looked up at him. She stood and took her son's hand.

She walked up to him and said, "Thank you."

Legolas nodded. The woman smiled and took her son's hand.
The boy looked at the elf one last time before walking off with his mother.

Something stirred inside Legolas. A distant memory filled his mind. A memory of him in his home. Before it became the dark place that it now was.

He was running under the trees. He was young, only a child. His feet were bare. He was running towards something. Someone.

A beautiful elf stood in the distance. She was clad in green and had long, golden hair that flowed down past her back.

She smiled and crouched down as Legolas ran towards her.

She took him into her arms and lifted him into the air and spun him around.

She held him close to her. Her beautiful blue eyes filled with love for her son.

Melin, ion.

The memory faded.
Legolas stood alone on the hillside. He watched as people were reunited with their loved ones. The ones they'd feared that they had lost.

No one came to him. And he didn't care. All he could think of was his mother, and how that was he had left of her.
