That awkward moment when you're listening to Maps by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and the drums come in and it scares you... Great song tho

Geometry is majorly boring. I spend the period doodling in my notebook. I draw a turtle, then some nunchucks, then some pizza, and I'm getting out the orange pencil and I've got a good thing going and then Renet gives me the look that means a teacher 's coming so I flip to yesterday's notes- Which cover whatever we're supposed to be learning today. Genius, right?

After Mr. Rockwell passes my desk, I subtly slide my notebook over to Renet with a question posed in my blocky handwriting.

'What didja pack for lunch?'

She gives me an I-Should-Know-Better-Look but slides it back with an answer in her tidy script. 'A salad. You?'

'Pizza ;)'

'How did I know?'

'Because you're my b-' I stop writing suddenly. I saw a flicker on the edge of my vision again. I look at Renet, my mouth creasing just slightly. She mouths 'rats'. This time I do know better though. I shake my head and mouth 'Yokai'.

She closes her eyes for a second, and I'm so worried that I messed up until she holds up her homework. 'We'll check later'. She really is the best.

So, here's the thing: My dad could see Yokai, and so could my mom. That's how they met, actually, because of one that looked like a rat. Mom saw it and went chasing after until it disappeared right at dad's feet, and the rest is history. I'm the only one of my brothers that Mom ever told that story to, because I'm the only one of my brothers that can fully see them. Leo can sense them a little but can't physically see them. He doesn't like talking about it though, so I'm basically alone in this. The only other one that knows is Miwa, and she's...

When later comes around, Renet and I recheck the math classroom for any sign of the yokai. There's not a single scratch of evidence though. I rub my eyes in frustration.

"I must be going crazier."

"It could have been your imagination. You've been especially paranoid since..."

She has always hesitated about this subject, and I think she always will (If I don't scare her off before then). When my dad died, we left his bedroom exactly the way it was. Leo went in and extinguished the candles so the apartment didn't burn down, but other than that it's completely unchanged. A few months ago, I snuck in there late at night to see if he had any pictures of him and mom. What I wasn't expecting was company. The thing was hovering over Dad's bed, and when I opened the door, it turned its head and looked at me. Not saw me. Looked at me. With intelligent eyes. The thing was all black smoke, wispy and cloudy. It's head, though, was this white mask-type thing. Its eyes were staring, glowing orbs that peered timelessly at me. Like the eyes of death. I ran out of there, slamming the door behind me, and jumped under my covers. I spent the entire night terrified that the thing would come after me. It didn't, or I wouldn't be here now, but I still double check the house every night.

It isn't until I think we're done that the yokai attacks.
