Chapter No.24 Come fly away.

Two days later, James had discovered something that even Robert didn't know.

"Hey Dad, did you know that we can fly?"

Robert's right eyebrow rose. "Fly?"

"Yeah, like superman."

"No kidding! I didn't know that." He smiled. "I guess I never thought that would be necessary since we can go anywhere instantaneously."

"Yeah, but flying is more fun."

Janet came in the living room. "What's more fun?"

"He says we can fly like superman," Robert told her.

"Really?"

"That's what he claims."

"Well," she said with a subtle grin. "We might have to wear spandex suits after all."

Robert laughed.

"I think I could just create them," James said. "But what I'm thinking of are more like superhero suits."

"Ok, but let's not put any kind of a symbol or wording on them."

James smiled. "I'll just give them a colorful trim."

"Actually, we could just make them appear on us anytime we wish," Robert said. "We should go somewhere secluded to test out flying."

"Where do you suggest?" Janet asked.

"How about the Rocky Mountains, maybe Colorado would be a good choice."

They instantly appeared on Mt. Elbert, the highest peak in Colorado. They stood near the peak attired in their new tight fitting dark blue suits. The suits incorporated boots and gloves.

"No one should be able to see us here," Robert said. "It's over fourteen thousand feet high."

"It's cold here," Janet said.

"Yeah, but it's nothing we can't endure."

James leapt into the air and flew off. Robert and Janet followed him on a leisurely flight around the mountain range.

"Wow!" Janet exclaimed. "What a view!"

They tried diving and then recovering to accelerate straight up. Maneuvering was effortless.

"Hey!" James shouted. "There's a plane coming."

"Something's wrong with it," Robert said. "Neither one of its engines are operating and it's losing altitude fast."

"What are we going to do?" Janet asked.

"I assume they're trying to land at the Denver airport, but they can't without at least one engine operating. We'll have to help them."

"How?" she asked.

"You take the right wing, grabbing it at the leading edge. I'll take the left wing. James, you take the tail. You'll do the steering."

They flew off and assumed their positions on the plane,

Inside the cockpit, the pilot and copilot were not happy with their present situation, and there was nothing air control could do to help them.

"What the hell?" the copilot said. "We're gaining altitude and speed. Has one of the engines started?"

"Not according to the readings. They're both dead." The pilot looked out at the left engine. He had to do a double take. "What the hell! There's a guy holding onto the wing."

The copilot looked out the right window. "There's a woman holding onto the right wing."

"I think we're going to have a lucky day," the pilot said, smiling.

"Or we're hallucinating," the copilot said.

"I think they're going to land us," the pilot said. "Tell Denver we're coming in."

After a several minutes. "They say there's no way we can land with both engines offline,"

"Tell them to check out our current velocity and course."

"No one is going to believe this."

"I think they will after they see all of the photos and videos that the passengers are taking."

The Steris family maneuvered the plane's glide path and velocity to land on Denver's main runway. The control center people just stared at what was an impossible event.

"Put the wheels down," the pilot said. "We're going to land."

"Hopefully, they'll be able to slow us down," the copilot said.

"I'm sure they will," the pilot said with a grin.

And they did. They moved the plane to its terminal location and stopped it. After jumping off of the plane, they stood near to it together before flying away.

The videos and photos of this amazing event flooded the media and caused a global stir that nearly took down the internet.

'Who were these superheroes?' was the top question floating around the media sites like a wildfire.

Robert, Janet and James relaxed at home while the fuss whirled around the globe.

"I'm surprised that no one has revealed our identity," Janet said as she watched the news showing their unbelievable feat.

"Maybe what we did was too hard for people to comprehend," Robert said. "Maybe they think we're aliens."

"There's a possibility that they think this was a stunt engineered by Marvel," James said.

"You mean the comic publisher?" Robert reacted.

"Yeah, but even that's too farfetched."

"Maybe it's DC," James said. "Then it wouldn't be that farfetched."

They laughed

The next day at high school, James noticed a bully picking on a freshman. He walked over to the pair and stood staring at them.

"What the hell are you looking at, Steris?" the bully blurted.

"Why don't you pick on someone your own size, Biff."

Biff reached out to grab James, but James jerked away. "I don't think you want to go there."

"Ha, I could squash you into a pulp."

James just smiled.

When Biff tried to grab James, he missed. One of his lunges caused Biff to bang into a locker.

"Ow!" Biff decided to walk away nursing his sore hand.

"Why didn't you deck him," Dave, the freshman asked.

"I'm not allowed to harm anyone," James said.

Dave stared at him with a confused look.

"Enjoy your day," James told him, leaving him standing there completely confused.

James realized that how he handled these situations was forever changed. He never imagined that he would be a superhero. It was mind bending to think that he could do just about anything. It was like trying to control a monster that you really don't understand.

Janet was working at her desk in the credit union office when Cristy, one of the tellers came over to talk.

"Did you see that plane rescue?" she asked. "I wonder who those people were?"

Janet surpassed a grin. "Maybe they're dedicated to saving people."

"They looked like a family."

"Hard to imagine that," Janet said.

"I don't know," Cristy said. "Maybe they're what this world needs."

Janet simply replied with a smile. She didn't want to say anything that would reveal her true identity. She worried that if that happened, her life would be changed forever. She never dreamed that she would become a superhero, and yet that's what she effectively was.

Robert, on the other hand, was reconciled with being a superhero. He felt that it was obviously his destiny from day one. But even he was not certain how to handle his new status.
