The Colt Anaconda is a double-action revolver. Cocking the hammer isn't necessary. I could've just pulled the trigger and ended this shithead. But I want to watch Red squirm.

Red's nerves dance in the chair. He's shaking.

"What else you got to say?" I say.

Red chokes. Takes a drink of water.

"I'm sorry. I am so, so sorry. I'm 100 percent responsible for murdering your father," Red says. "It's why I wanted to find you. I had to tell you. I'd take it back if I could. But I didn't have a choice. Even if your mother got a divorce, there was no guarantee that land would've been sold."

No, asshole. You're responsible for everything. Sounds like some people in town might feel the same way.

"So that's it then? You just wanted to talk?" I say.

"Your mother wants you back at the farm one last time. I know it's hard, but consider going back with me. Not for my sake. For hers," Red says.

I shake my head. Laugh because I don't know what else to do.

"I don't owe her anything. And I'm sure as hell not going anywhere with you," I say. Hear a loud truck drive by in the distance. Switch topics. "Who's this other person coming to get me?"

"She's an FBI agent. She's working with Jane. One of them will get you in the end," Red says. Cracks a pathetic attempt at a convincing smile. "But maybe you and I can honor your mother's wishes with a visit anyway."

"Wait. So how did this Jane get involved with me? I thought Jane was just for the eco-terrorist guy," I say.

"I called her. I wanted her to find you before the FBI did. I needed to tell you what had happened," Red says. "But then Jane and the FBI started working together anyway. I about died trying to outrun them here."

I keep the revolver on him and an ear to how quiet the night outside the RV becomes.

"So Jane, the same person you say rained hell on Betrug, now wants me? And you called her to do it?" I say. "Holy shit, Red. Why have I not killed you yet?"

"You'll get your chance to kill me. But first, let's see your mother," Red says. Sweaty and desperate. "Come on. What do you say?"

I don't give him a kiss off. No final words. No acknowledgement.

I just pull the trigger.
