SIX MONTHS LATER

The waitress opens the Betrug Bugle. Leans against the counter at the Betrug Café.

"What are you reading?" says a man in overalls with a burly beard. Takes a seat on the other side of the counter.

"About that old Reynolds place. The one they sold," the waitress says. "Guess they're building a road through it. And some other stuff."

"Really? That's too bad. The market wants what it wants, I guess," the man says. Points to the menu. Licks his lips. "Say, you got any pie left?"

"You want pumpkin or apple?" the waitress says.

"Pumpkin," the man says.

"Sorry, we only have apple. How many pieces you want?" the waitress says.

"Two," the man says.

"There's only one left," the waitress says.

"OK, I'll have one then," the man in overalls says. "But why didn't you just tell me that in the first place?"

"I guess I wanted you to think you had a choice how it would be in the end, even if it didn't really matter. It's good for business," the waitress says with a wink. "Now how about some apple pie?"
