Oh, shit. I remember now. Sam and me were back in Doc's camper. He gave everyone a bag. Sam tossed hers to the scrawny guy. And I completely blanked on mine. Never got rid of it.

Les pokes at the bag with his cane. Flips it over. There's a red cross marked on it.

I'm expecting the cane across my temple. Les surprises me with something else.

"This one came from Doc," Les says. Flips the bag back up to me. "Lucky you. He's approved to pass this stuff out for good behavior. You must've done right by him lately."

"Keep it," I say. Toss it back. "I don't want it."

Les hands the baggie off. Aims his cane at Sam.

"You, too. Let's see them," he says.

The two guys with Les close in around us. Watch Sam invert her pockets. Nothing.

"Well, well. You two are straight shooters after all. I like people I can count on," Les says.

I take the opportunity to kiss a little ass. Help cool Les down.

"We're here to work. Not to shoot guns or buy dope," I say.

"But you are here to fight, apparently," Les says. Points his cane at Sam's hand. "I see you got a little blood on you there. I don't suppose you took a swing at my guy, did you?"

Sam doesn't lie. Seems proud to tell Les that, yes, she planted a rock in the scrawny guy's face.

I suck in a cold gulp of prairie wind. Not sure how he's going to take that. Unapproved fighting is against the rules, too.

Les shrugs.

"Can't blame a woman for protecting herself. Especially out here. These guys don't see many females. Go a little loopy when they do," he says.

"Thanks, I guess," Sam says.

Les offers us a pull from a flask. We don't refuse. Warms us up.

"How did it feel when you hit him? Good?" Les says to Sam.

The drink puts the edge back in her. Me, too.

"Yeah. Real fucking good," Sam says.

"Good. Think you could do it again?" Les says.

"Yeah. I could do it," Sam says.

Les scoots his wheelchair around. Motions for us to follow him.

"I think you two might be a better fit for a different line of work," he says. "There's something I need you two to do for me."

I tie up the last trash bag. Let it sit. We won't be coming back.
