Introduction

Welcome! This story is a sequel to Treacherous Witch. If you haven't read it, I recommend you start with that first. It's a complete story, and The Patriarch's Court picks up immediately after it so won't make much sense as a standalone. 

If you'd like to know what you're in for, however, the below introduction gives an idea of what to expect across the series and doesn't contain any major spoilers.

What to expect

Secrets, Lies and Intrigue: Everyone has something to hide, and everyone has something they want. Expect manipulation, backstabbing and scheming galore.

Antiheroine Lead: Our protagonist is as slippery as the rest. This is not a straightforward good vs evil, heroes vs villains kind of fantasy.

Power Dynamics: Much of the story is centered around a loss of agency and a struggle to overcome it. We are seeing the aftermath of a realm that has been conquered by an empire. Some people try to resist. Most have no choice but to adapt to the new order.

Slowburn Dark Romance: The story does not necessarily follow the genre conventions of a traditional romance. The characters do not represent healthy behaviour in or out of a relationship. They are generally terrible to each other.

Content Warnings

Mature Content: There is no explicit content in this series. However, it does include themes of sexual coercion, controlling and manipulative behaviour, and references to slavery and forced prostitution.

Violence: The political conflict touches on themes of oppression, imperialism and war. There are graphic depictions of violence, including torture and assault.

Discrimination: The story depicts a conflict between a patriarchy and a matriarchy. The protagonist was born into a society ruled by women and now finds herself living in a world where misogyny is a normal part of the culture.

Enemies to Lovers: When I say enemies, I really mean enemies. Violence, manipulation and emotional warfare are all part of the ongoing conflict between the protagonist and antagonist.
