Chapter 14

Tiger POV: Uriah

"Are we ever going to move away from this stupid basketball unit?" Levi asked as he sat on the bleachers, digging through his backpack to try to find his water bottle. "It's the same result every class."

Physical Education ended not too long ago. Well, the basketball game ended. We were now just waiting for the last few minutes before we were dismissed.

"Don't blame us Tigers," I said, leaning against the railing of the bleachers on the end of the first row of seats. "We're just the amazing."

"It's not you always winning I'm annoyed at," Levi said. "It's Wayne's smug smile. Like I get it, he won again. He doesn't have to rub it in. Or glare at me. Why is he always glaring at me?"

"Probably because of his insane rule of us Tigers not being allowed to associate with any Owls, Coyotes, or Dolphins," I said as I sat down beside him. "And for some reason, you are causing two people to break that rule."

"Yes, for some odd reason like one of them being my sister," Levi said. "And the other being... Well, you. And speaking of, I have to tell you something. I know you said you don't want people knowing about... us until the Wayne situation is sorted but..."

He trailed off but it was clear what he was going to say. "Who knows, exactly?"

"Pearl, Ester, Piano, and Alvin," Levi said. "I swear, I didn't tell them. They just... knew. I was talking to Astrid who was previously talking to them and after she walked away, they brought it up. I really didn't s--"

"Levi," I interrupted. "Say no more. You said Piano knows? That explains everything. That guy knows everything happening in the school. I kind of figured he'd be the first to know, and he's not the type of person to tell everyone what he knows if it's someone else's secrets."

"What about Pearl, Ester, and Alvin?" Levi asked.

"Well, I don't know too much about them since they're in another house," I said. "But what I do know is Alvin always stays out of drama and doesn't care much about what other people are up to. And Pearl and Ester don't seem like the type of people to tell anyone."

"Okay, that took a bunch of weight off my shoulder," Levi said. "They did say they wouldn't tell anyone but I just wanted to be sure."

Mr. Hicks suddenly walked into the gymnasium and everyone immediately turned their attention to him, knowing he had something important to tell us. "Well, I'm glad to know my presence is all I need for everyone to pay attention to me," he said with a smile. "Extremely well done; showing respect for roles of authority. Anyway, my announcement is just for those from the Tiger house."

Please tell me Wayne was expelled.

"It has come to my attention that some of you may be... displeased with the current captain status," Mr. Hicks said, which made Wayne's face turn deep red in anger. He was fuming. "So if any of you are truly wanting a change of captains, the Tiger house will have an election to vote in a new captain. However, this will only happen if one, or more, are interested in the role of a captain. If there is, you'll run against Wayne. So, that being said, would anyone like to run?"

Wayne immediately sent death glares to all the members of the Tiger house, trying to intimidate them into not running.

It was such a shame he couldn't intimidate me.

Running would have so many benefits for me. One, it would make Wayne extremely mad and hate me more, which is my life's goal. Two, if I win, he would be even more mad. Three, I wouldn't have to sneak around with Levi.

I said as I was sitting right beside him, barely any space between the two of us.

I shot my arm up in the air. "I'll run."

Mr. Hicks nodded but for some reason, he seemed sort of disappointed with me wanting to run. Did he really want Wayne to stay captain that badly? If he did, why hold the election anyway?

"Alright, here's what will happen," Mr. Hick said. "Uriah and Wayne will campaign for the next two weeks. Final speeches will happen on Friday after class and the voting will be right after. Thank you, that is all."

As he walked off, Levi said in a quiet voice so nobody could hear, "Two weeks? I don't want to sneak around for two more weeks?"

I shushed him and gave him a playful shove, trying not to hide the smile on my face.

Astrid walked over to us, pulling Diesel behind her. She smiled as she said, "You're welcome, Uriah!"

I furrowed my eyebrows. "I'm confused."

"Well, I was complaining about Wayne being Wayne, so Diesel had the idea to have an election within the Tiger house," Astrid said. "You know, since the captaincy only affects us Tigers, not Mr. Hicks. So we talked to him about it and he agreed."

"Just like that?" I asked. "Wow, I wish I thought of that sooner. Thanks for that idea, Diesel."

"No problem," Diesel said softly. He was a quiet talker most of the time. In fact, I had only seen him talk to Pearl, Ester, and Astrid.

"And since you're running, you do know what you have to do, right?" Astrid asked.

       "Beat Wayne?" I asked.

"No," Astrid said. "Well, yes, but no. Since I'm clearly going to vote for you, you have to for sure lock in Zane and Sofia's votes. One hundred percent. And then... You're going to have to either convince Nevaeh, Dakota, or Nixie to vote for you if you don't want it to be a tie."

I sighed. "I didn't think of that. That just makes things a lot harder."

       "Why?" Levi asked.

"Dakota is Wayne's best friend," I said. "And Nevaeh is his secret girlfriend who just so happens to be my ex-girlfriend. And the break up... Wasn't pretty."

"Right, Piano told me," Levi said.

"Why did... Never mind, of course he did," I said. "Anyway, Nixie is one of Wayne's friends as well so clearly, they'll vote for him. If I do get Zane and Sofia's votes, then it will be tied. And knowing Mr. Hicks, he'll decide the winner."

"And choose Wayne since he did choose Wayne to be captain in the first place," Levi said.

"Exactly," I said. "I might... I think I might be able to convince Nevaeh to vote for me."

"Nevaeh?" Astrid repeated. "You're kidding, right? Your break up was brutal and she cheated on you with Wayne. You really think you can convince her? I think Nixie is your safest bet."

"The break up might have been messy but I still dated Nevaeh," I said. "I know her. She's the safest bet. And I think I know how to convince her."

       "Are you sure?" Astrid asked.

       "Positive," I said.
