These letters are from King Azrael to his lost lover, Aseneth.

Since Azrael is a royal and Aseneth is a prostitute their love is forbidden so he writes his letters to her in codes. As you will notice, he uses variations of names including objects to refer to certain people (such as "the sword" which refers to his wife, Princess Narazejt). He also writes one of the letters in Linztic because Aseneth is the only person he knows who can understand it besides him and the princess. And he uses the word "reitla" which is the equivalent of "amen" in Aseneth's native language, Caidic.

There are 2 ways to read this collection:

1) Read them in the published order and watch Azrael struggle with his ardent infatuation for his lover and his chaotic hatred of her absence.
2) Read them in chronological order and watch Azrael's undoing and descent into madness as he discovers the truth about his lost lover.

The "Ballad of Glass" is not part of Azrael's letters so reading it is optional, but if you want to know what Azrael discovers about Aseneth, you should read it.

Letter 5 (Translated)

I prayed once for you, my joy
My heart beats in that

Your beauty alone is worth living for
Your beauty alone, my angel, is worth living for
I prayed once for you, my angel
Reitla (amen)

If anything is worth praying for
Worthy is a crystal

- Your night poet
